The overall song carries the message of no matter how we try to conceal something, our insides remain the same. Insides meaning our actions, personality, character, emotions. Sethe can resonate with these beliefs as she was so reluctant to opening up in the start knowing that her past was intense.

When Stamp Paid gives Paul D the news about Sethe murdering her own child, Paul D refuses to stay with her.

When Paul D decides to confront Sethe about finding out her past, Sethe tries to make him understand that the reason why she did it was to protect her children from suffering the hardships of slavery the same way she had experienced.

This does not change Paul Ds perspective, he even brings himself to tell Sethe that she has "2 feet, not 4", in which he meant to tell her that she had acted as savage as an animal and inhumane towards her daughter. The theme in this section is separation vs. connection because Paul D is described to have believed that Sethe was very cold-hearted, and that finding out the truth about her caused an emotional detachment between them.

"Life goes on, it gets so heavy"

Paradise by Coldplay is a song about a girl who realized that her life wasn't what she expected and wished her life was perfect. The first piece of the lyric correlates with Denver. Denver was isolated from society after the townsfolk knew about the murder of her sister Beloved. Denver desperately wished for affection. The second piece of the lyric for me connects with Sethe and Paul D. Sethe was raped and mistreated by schoolteachers nephew, had murdered Beloved, and went to jail with Denver ,who was a baby at the time of the murder. In the matter of Paul D, he was punished after trying to escape Sweet Home with Sixo, witnessed Sixo's death, and was sent to prison after attempting to murder Brandywine.
