Equality and individuality are common themes in "Harrison Bergeron" and The Giver. Pick a topic, either equality or individuality, and type the topic in the title area. Give two examples from "Harrison Bergeron" and explain what the author is trying to teach people about that topic.

Equality by any means necessary may lead to a world in which differences are not appreciated or tolerated. For example, in "Harrison Bergeron" people are forced to wear heavy handicaps in order to be less strong or graceful than anyone else. In addition, intelligent people wear radio transmitters that broadcast excruciating sounds, so they can't think better than anyone else. The author is using this to show that striving for equality can be a bad thing if you take it too far.

In "Harrison Bergeron" the author tries to explain that there are consequences to being too equal because according to the text it says"They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General." also it says that "mental handicap, he wore a tremendous pair of earphones, and spectacles with thick wavy lenses. The spectacles were intended to make him not only half blind, but to give him whanging headaches besides."

Individuality leads to expression to where you are unique and different from other people. For example, in "Harrison Bergeron" people are wearing weights and radio transmitters and bird shot bags. Everyone has different amounts of weights that is connected to a padlock on their necks. Another example is that in the story, Harrison labels himself as the emperor because he likes to take control. He finds a ballerina to be his emperess and together they showed the true meaning of dance. He makes sure she doesn't any weights on her so that they can dance how they want to. This shows that they wanted to be individual and individuality gives people a way to show their true meaning

Individuality means the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked. In the giver Jonas decides to give the community back its memory. Equality means to the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities. In Herison berguan he talks about people being free and different than anybody else.
