         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 2000, according to Barber, "there were 31 million American kids between twelve and nineteen, controlling 155 billion consumer dollars. Just four years later, there were 33.5 million kids controlling $169 billion, or roughly $91 per week per kid".<br><br>Schor argues that "children age four to twelve made $30 billion" in purchases in 2002, while kids aged twelve to nineteen "accounted for $170 billion of personal spending."<br><br>Molnar and Boninger cite figures indicating that pre-teens and teenagers command "$200 billion in spending power."<br><br>Young people are attractive to corporations because they are big spenders, but that is not the only reason. They also exert a powerful influence on parental spending. According to Anap Shah, "Children (under 12) and teens influence parental purchases totaling over $670 billion a year."</div>]]></description>
