Though the clinical responsibilities of nursing leadership are vital, emotional intelligence is a characteristic that is proven to be a determining factor in retention, job satisfaction, patient satisfaction, quality of care, and overall performance of the nursing team. Nursing staff may require more emotional intelligence when working on units where the nurse experiences more face-to-face interaction with the patients. Nursing leadership should show a proficiency in emotional intelligence and recruiters should look for this characteristic when interviewing potential managers. Nursing curriculum should include emotional intelligence, and organizations should adjust to meet the need to foster this characteristic in current and potential leaders.

Emotional intelligence is a vital characteristic to implement as part of daily nursing care, especially in leadership. The nurse manager who portrays emotional intelligence is one who is able to identify, process, and manage emotions in order to cope with demands and to be more effective both in the workplace and personally. In the demanding healthcare environment, the emotional competence of the nurse managers and leaders may potentially determine the wellbeing of the nursing team as a whole and the patients under their care.
