The movie never really told us about Jamal's father since he was never talked about. (I am going to assume that Jamal's father is not in the picture anymore.) So when Jamal met Forrester, they had kinda of a father and son relationship. Jamal needed someone like Forrester in his life and Forrester also needed Jamal. Jamal probably longed for that father to guide him and Forrester waited for that one person in his life that doesn't see him as a famous writer. That's why Forrester was so willingly to help Jamal with his writings. Jamal goes up to Forrester's apartment and accidentally leaves his backpack there. Forrester goes through all of Jamal's writings and makes corrections. Jamal was not happy about this, but they learned to agree and appreciate each other. Forrester helped Jamal become a great writer and Jamal helped Forrester to get outside of his apartment and be in public. They did not really know each other and their friendship was not that good but near the end they became really good friends and they helped each other and Forrester admitted to Jamal's whole class that he is his friend. Forrester and they enjoyed their time together. They impacted eachother by being their for eachother and being like really close friends because Jamal helped Forrester because he lives all alone and needs someone to watch over him, and Forrester helped Jamal with his writing and help him do better during school.

The friendship between these two was so unique and special but also very beneficial for both of them. Jamal was impacted by William because William was able to improve Jamal's writing and help him not be afraid of sharing his talent of writing. At the end of the day they helped each other even more than just impacted each other.
