Carol Ann Duffy was born December 23rd, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland. She lived in Glasgow, Scotland, until when she was six and her family moved to Stafford, England. Her father, Frank Duffy was a fitter for an electric company. Growing up she attended convent schools and published her poetry in magazines starting at the age of just 14! She graduated with a degree in philosophy from Liverpool University in 1977. (Britannica)

After graduating from Liverpool University, Duffy worked to publish several books and traveled to read and teach her poetry. For some time, she worked as a poetry critic for the British newspaper, The Guardian as well as an editor for the poetry magazine, Ambit. She began to lecture in poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1996, she later became creative director of the Writing School. (Britannica)

Throughout her career, Duffy received many awards. For example, in 1985 she received the Scottish Arts Council Award for her work, Standing Female Nude. In 2011 Carol Ann Duffy received the Costa Book Award for poetry and the T.S. Eliot Prize. In 1999 after becoming a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in England, her papers were gathered by the Robert W. Woodruff Library of Emory University. (Academy of American Poets)
