While women's rights in the Middle East still are not where they should be today, it is a huge improvement compared to the 7th century before Islam was introduced. Before then most female newborns were abused or murdered because of their sex. Islam forbade this and decreed both genders have he same responsibilities in the eyes of their God. In the 13th century women were a huge influence on their husbands and government with matters concerning their country even though there was no official head of state. Many girls were raised to rule and command armies though few were actually royalty and most were common people. In 1957, Rawya Ateya became the first woman elected into parliament in Egypt. Then from 1970-1987 Jehan Al Sedat became the first lady of Egypt and serve as a role model to all oher women and worked to change the image of how people viewed muslim women. This is just some of the background and history of women's roles in the Middle East. And though they have accomplished many things to improve their rights things are still not what they ought to be.

Domestic violence against women is a huge issue in Palestine. About 26 women were slain by relatives in the West Bank and Gaza in the year 2013. That is estimated to be about 2 times as many as the previous year. This rise in number is suspected to be from the escalating economic difficulties in the Palestinian territories, along with continuous leniency for individuals killing in the name of "family honor" and society making violence against women the norm. Activists have urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to make the sentences longer for the people doing this.
