ESPAÑOL:(Buenos Aires, 1890 - 1977) Pintor y muralista argentino.

ENGLISH:( Buenos Aires, 1890-1977 ) Argentine painter and muralist .He was one of the " Painters of La Boca " (one of the neighborhoods of his hometown) . With a naturalistic style , his work revolved mainly around vessels and port work in general. He was considered the painter of The “Riachuelo” because of the themes of his paintings.

Abandoned shortly after birth , remained in an orphanage until, at age six , Manuel Molina Chinchella and Justina decided to adopt him. He began his training at school where he remained only two years since, with only nine, he had to start working in his father's coal yard .

Thereafter, and until he was fifteen , he was a worker at the port of La Boca ; his job was to climb into the boats to fill empty coal bags and load them with coal into trucks . He participated actively in the politics at La Boca putting up posters and handing out leaflets on behalf of Dr. Alfredo Palacios.

In 1907 he entered a modest drawing academy in his neighborhood to study painting with Alfredo Lazzari Since then he devoted himself to painting. He met Juan de Dios Filiberto , a music student with whom he maintained a close friendship. He also met , then director of the Academy of Fine Arts, Collivadino Pius , who helped him get started in drawing portraits and incorporate color to his works.

In 1918 he changed his name (Benito Juan Martin ) for Quinquela by removing the name of Juan and adapting the surname of his adoptive father to the Italian pronunciation. With its new name, the November 4 he exhibited his paintings at the First Solo Exhibition of Witcomb Gallery. The show was a success and the critics spoke of the emergence of an original painter, with technique , style and message.

From the moment they began their world travels . In 1921 he made his first international exhibition in Rio de Janeiro. His first trip to Europe was made two years later , specifically Madrid. In 1925 he arrived in Paris two years later in New York and in 1929 to Italy, where Mussolini named his favorite painter " because he knew how to portray work." All trips separated him from his parents; hence he rejected an invitation to Japan and stayed with them in the Argentine neighborhood of La Boca.
