Art experiences in my education growing up!

I grew up in Plainview my entire life. Planview is very diverse; we have people of all cultures and religions, so in school we incorporated culture into what we were learning in some way/or held events celebrating culture. Art has always helped me be as creative as I want to be, it allows me to express my feelings. I am a very emotional person, so as I was growing up I always expressed myself through drawings or using movement(when allowed). For example, if we were to recreate a story in class, I would overdramatize a scene or put a spin to the story. Arts help build creative problem-solving skills, and helps visual learners, like me, different subjects. I am a visual and kinesthetic learner, and incorporating art to a lesson appealed to me the most.

May Festival (Colvin Elementary)

I went to Colvin elementary and every year they would have something called the May Festival. The entire school would perform in this festival -- Pre-k through 5th -- and each grade would be assigned a specific dance to learn, so they could perform in this festival. Prepping for the May Festival was probably one of my most favorite time of the year. It took 3-4 months for us to learn our dance. We would practice every time we went to our music class. Every dance had a story or was tied to a different country around the world. All teachers from the entire school would come together and collaborate with the music teacher. The homeroom teacher would come up with a lesson, specifically made for the dance that we were learning. It helped tremendously learning about the background of these dances and where they originated; it was also very fascinating, Especially because were were learning about different cultures around the world. I remember coming home and telling my mom about the sword dance and what it represented and originated. For example, one year my class performed the Dragon dance. I had so much fun because we were dancing inside of a dragon costume. Our teacher dedicated an entire lesson to the history of the dragon dance. We learned that it originated in China and it is a traditional dance they perform during celebrations in their country. My favorite part was actually performing in front of the entire community!

Reason 6: The arts build up community and help children develop collaborative work skills.

Collaboration is key to a success.Teachers need to work with other teachers, no matter the grade level or subject. I appreciate that my homeroom teacher was wiling to work with our music teacher to help us learn the history regarding the dance we were going to perform at the May festival. It is important to give your students a little more information about a topic/or subject so they can become more familiar with it. The May Festival was a great way to have teachers come together and collaborate, and it was an even better way to bring the entire community together for one day and celebrate different cultures. I think, art education connects students with their own culture as well as with the wider world. Plainview is a very low income neighborhood with a lot of violence, so it was nice to have the entire community come together, and learn about different cultures around the world. There was music, dancing, and food! We all worked together in the classroom to learn the dance, the music, and the history. I remember walking home with my friends , and all we wanted to talk about was about the dance we would be performing. We would make posters, signs, and pamphlets to hand out to the community about our May Festival. The teacher would allow us to be as creative as we wanted to be; there were no limits. When we created art, we were engaging constantly bouncing ideas off of each other. It was an amazing experience at such a young age. If was the perfect opportunity, to teach students how to work together.
