         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Japanese government agreed to sign the treaty with Perry, representing the US government, allowing the ports of Shimoda and Hakodate to be open to American trade. Despite&nbsp;<span style="font-size: 13px;">Japan being closed to foreigners in 1683, the US managed to get through to them, making them the first Western nation to establish relations with the Japanese.  Below is the route that Commodore Perry took to Tokyo, where the treaty was officially signed.</span></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The United States wanted the treaty with Japan. Commodore Matthew C. Perry had succesfully completed two out of three of his goals for helping America gain access to Japan.  He was able to get 2 coaling ports for the Navy's new steamships and he was also able to Americ<span style="font-size: 13px;">a's oil workers (whalers).  However, his final goal was to create a treaty that would help establish trade with Japan (commercial treaty), that was not put into place until 1858. </span></p><p>(Commodore Matthew C. Perry spoke on America's behalf).</p>]]></description>
