  • Use graphics such as maps, photographs, and other visual displays as much as possible.
  • Gather materials that can be used for hands-on learning, such as math manipulative materials, sensory learning materials (e.g., sandpaper letters), maps, and graphs
  • Set up a classroom library that includes a listening centre with books on tape and earphones. Children love to listen to a story. ELLs can listen to a book on tape that they are not yet ready to read on their own.

    5. Open lines of communication between parents and the school

    Educate Parents: 
    Another strategy to consider is to educate parents more directly about the ways in which they can help their children with school work. 
    1.School districts should offer bilingual parent workshops. • scheduling

    • transportation 
    2.Community Partnerships 
    Support and Encourage ELL parents: 
    1. Encourage ELL parents to volunteer in the classroom as well as at school events to have them promote information about the home language and continue to support home language literacy. 
    2. Provide resources in many different languages so that you are showing that you value all languages and the maintenance of them. 
    3. Have a Community Liaison or parent buddy system, pairing parents of similar backgrounds together at information nights or back to school events 
    4. Create opportunities for parents to engage in sharing their home cultures and their own expertise because this will foster a positive attitude to ELL children about their first language and learning experiences.

I am a firm believer in sharing resources to not only gain new knowledge of strategies but also to learn what has worked/not worked in the past. Subsequently they can pay a fee, of they can''t make the hours. Though I completely disagree with this practice, I think bringing in parents to the class to support with simple tasks to start is a great idea of building a connection for ELL families in the school. Maybe they could read a story in their own language, and kids (elementary maybe) could try to use the pictures to discuss what is going on. I have several FNMI books with a CD I play to share the Aboriginal language they are written in.
