In this video the teacher uses academic controversy to help prepare them for argumentative essays. This would be great in the English content area because you often have to address both sides of the argument and present counter arguments to develop a well thought out, and evidence based paper. By using academic controversy students are given time to prepare their arguments and share them with each other before switching sides or changing perspectives and repeating the process.

A great example from this article is "working

with disadvantaged or minority groups in the

community to give expression to their needs,

their situations, and their cause by writing

letters or submissions to local, national, or

world bodies." This not only gives students a chance to demonstrate and practice their formal writing skills but also gives them the opportunity to gather evidence and put it into writing while tackling a real world issue where they can actually make a difference.

Jigsaw is a great activity and it works great with English. Students can read different parts of an article or novel then teach or summarize it to their peers to better their understanding of it. This can also work well with vocabulary. Students can be given a sentence from a novel they are studying with a complex word it in. Based off the text clues, they can try to come up with the definition of the word and share it with a partner who has a different sentence and word. Then the students can look up the real definitions and share them with each other.

An example of this is having the students do a podcast for an assessment. This could be a podcast on the novel that we studied, prevalent theme from our studies, or some other topic or interview that is relevant to our class. They could then share parts of their podcast during class presentations.

A English project/presentation that I had in mind for this is students research and prepare information for a time period of the historical or classical novel that we are studying. For example, students would split up into groups and one group would research the clothing worn by people during the time period, while another group would research etiquette or food. This way students can learn about these aspects through their own research groups and listening to other groups presentations and this will help students better understand the novel itself.
