My grades tell students whether or not they're meeting the standards required in the assignments. Their grades shape their academic identity by giving them feedback on their performance in class. My grades tell myself what standards are/are not being covered clearly in my teaching, provide other teachers a more wholistic view of students' academic performance, and tell parents whether or not their child is getting something from my class.

I have a Standards-Based Grading system going that is I think pretty different from what students are used to. The idea of one exam being 2-3 different grades is kind of foreign. But I think/hope it's motivational in the sense of "Oh, well, I didn't really get Communication - but I aced the Pattern-Finding standard!"
I'm also trying to be very clear and deliberate about each point and what they're for so I have an ironclad, bias-resistant key to fall back on.

To them, it tells them that they are failing.
For me, I it lets them know that they have not met the standards that we have gone over.

Currently, it means that they cannot move on to the next section of this class. It also means that they will struggle with following directions, reading comprehension, and writing.

This message to myself is that I need to find better ways to break down information, ask for advice/work on classroom management, and be even more clear when it comes to directions.

It sends a message that my students are struggling.

I am trying to develop a classroom culture around standards-based grading. I am new to this approach but so far I am having a good experience with it. Here are the benefits I've seen:
-Grading by skills standards allows you to develop data sets on targeted skills so you can plan for supporting skills when needed
-It is possible to show students exactly how to get closer to "mastery" of a skill
-Students can see their progress on different skills. It can be made visible to them that while they may have low grades in one skill, they could still have a high grade on another skill. It complexifies student academic identity instead of boiling everything down to the final "letter"

I think a lot about column three, "motivational" and what the culture around grades and culture around assessment need to be in order to have motivational grades. This is not a one teacher lift, but a school-wide lift as students have been conditioned on grades being a label or an indictment of their intelligence, ability, potential. I don't want to give the wrong idea here, but some of our meetings definitely feel unproductive. Especially those that don't seem to benefit the concerns of now? Maybe I don't understand them. I'm nervous that teachers will want to find jobs elsewhere because of the lack of admin and dean support. All the first year teacher support that the mentors are doing is going to feel like a waste if we lose all our new teachers then start the whole process over again next year with even more kids and no improvements with discipline procedures. Today's conversation supports my practice because I know of several other teachers now who value consistency in their role as teacher as much as I do. I don't feel isolated with this idea the way you might if you don't share and hear shares from others.

definitely interested in applying some of the skills i've picked up in geometry to lightly PBL-ize the algebra 1 curriculum. i've learned a lot about how best to keep to standards while doing something a little less rote.

I want my kids to do some more personal exploration in whichever content area we're discusssing/studying. As a new SPED teacher, I feel like I could take more risks and it would be empowering for the kids to take more ownership of their learning.

I wish to implement check ins with students in the regular class. This is important for students 1. to get a "reality check" on their progress. 2. I can gage how I can better support them in reaching their goals. and 3. I can think of how to engage them with culturally relevant supports.

deeper learning is taking precedent over grades and how the grading process supposedly indicates student progress. This suggests that grades are becoming a thing of the past, and I am in agreement with the new way.
