Would it be helpful to give my students a "learning style" survey? That way, I can see how many students are "visual" learners and predict whether or not having a "visual" to help them monitor their participation would be helpful or not.

This article discusses participation as a means of "currency." This is essentially the opposite of what I've hypothesized - the author states that students participate more when they receive poker chips, or some type of compensation, in return for their participative comment. It also discusses the advantages/disadvantages of taking away this currency as a form of negative reinforcement.

This author discusses how, even in college, there are many students who "dominate" the discussion, and she offers some of her own action research solutions to this problem. Perhaps it would be useful to take what she's learned and apply it to high school discusses - this way, the students are more trained in the area of employing effective discussion techniques.
