Teaching Method #1

The first teaching method which can be used to support integrated studies, is the method of facilitating. This helps to promote self-learning to occur during integrated studies. Students are facilitated by teachers to develop their critical thinking skills (Gill, 2015). This is an advantage to this teaching method as it promotes a cross-curricular skills, which is present within the requirements of the Australian Curriculum. This method also allows students to ask questions and develop skills which enable them to find solutions (Gill, 2015).

In additional to the advantages this teaching method has, there are also some limitations that need to be considered. A challenge that will be presented for teachers is, that the focal point needs to be encouragement towards discovery; rather than towards direct knowledge (Gill, 2015). This can become a limitation with integrated studies as there are certain requirements which need to be met from each subject. Overall, facilitation is a great way to support meaningful learning to occur during integrated studies.

The Second teaching method which is valuable to integrated studies is the use of brainstorming. This can be performed as a whole class, small learning group or individually. During the method of brain storming students are discovering new thoughts and responses quickly (Teaching Methods, n.d). This will ensure meaningful learning to occur in integrated studies. Students are collaborating ideas which lead to animated and energised sessions. It encourages students who are more reserved to participate in the activity which is a great advantage to the teaching method (Teaching Methods, n.d). Brain storming is also beneficial for integrated studies as you can include multiple aspects which are being covered and explain to students how they are all entwined.

There are limitations that need to be taken into consideration when preforming brain storming. This method, although successful usually takes time to develop the discussion. Therefore time management needs to be taken into consideration especially if it’s being performed in a large group of students (Teaching Methods, n.d). This method also requires a large amount of facilitation skills to be obtained by the teacher. This could become a limitation if the teacher is yet to have experience in facilitating these types of discussions with students. They may find without this skill students may become distracted or get lead away from the topic. Overall, even though there are limitations present this teaching method, it is fantastic to use with integrated studies as it allows for meaningful learning to occur.

What does meaningful learning look like in integrated studies?

Meaningful learning involves an overall understanding of how all the pieces of one concept fit together as one (Oxford Learning, 2017). The knowledge that is gained through meaningful learning not only applies to the current learning situation, but can also be transferred into new learning opportunities (Oxford Learning, 2017). Meaningful learning in integrated studies should look active, constructive and highly engaging. These learning opportunities that are presented to students will be long-lasting and useful both in-school and out of school.
