Rosa was born February 4, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her full name was Rosa Louise McCauley and she had a younger brother named Sylvester. Her parents separated when she was 2 years old and she and her brother went to live with her mom. Rosa was a quiet girl who liked to read and sew. Growing up, Rosa was home-schooled by her mother and attended public school when she was 11. She never completed high school because she was forced to drop out to take care of her sick grandmother. Rosa's childhood was difficult because she was forced to endure the Jim Crow laws of the south which separated white people and black people in almost all parts of their lives. This would later motivate Rosa to stand up against unfair laws.

Did you know that Rosa Parks was known for many great things besides her famous bus boycott? Rosa grew up during a time where segregation was the norm. Even though blacks were treated differently, and unfairly, Rosa always stood up for herself. Rosa joined the National Association for the Advancement for Colored People (NAACP). On December 1st, 1955 Rosa decided to ride the bus home from work. While on the bus she refused to give up her seat to a white man and was later arrested. Rosa was charged with a ten dollar fine but refused to pay! News of Rosa's arrest made other African Americans furious. Many people got together and decided to boycott the buses. The boycott lasted for 381 days. Finally, the Supreme Court ruled that the segregation laws (Jim Crow laws) were unfair. After Rosa's victory, she continued to attend civil rights meetings. This activist was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for all her efforts. Rosa was nicknamed the mother of the Civil Rights Movement and today she is still admired by many.
