I did find I needed to add a T-peg under the pawl to prevent it from dropping below the ratchet wheel. This also gave me an appreciation for friction--if I were using a ratchet in a final creation I think I'd want something smooth like metal to prevent extra friction between the pawl and the ratchet wheel.
