The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline (pg 103)

(Sample by Tenley G and Mrs. Radcliff)
#2 and #4) I would argue that the setting, Canada, makes it harder for the main characters to survive because of the climate and history. Our cast is trying to get away from people and recruiters (those who hunt them) which means they need to stray very far from populated areas. This makes sense, however, it’s very hard to do that in Canada since the most unpopulated place is the north where it’s freezing cold. Canada also has a history of residential schools and killing/severely harming its indigenous population. On the subject of Recruiters, they capture indigenous people and send them to camps, which resemble that of residential schools. They gain control through violence and fear. There are very few places to hide which is why it is so imperative the main cast makes it North (and also why their setting works against them for that reason). Most follow them and support them because they too want dreams. Even some indigenous characters have joined with them just to stay alive in fear of what would happen if they were caught.

Global Issue: Eugenics Today
While it's most obvious that there were residential schools across North America as late as 2007, I chose to make another parallel: forced sterilization. In The Marrow Thieves, characters are hunted and returned to these schools, but parts of their bodies are taken for the benefit of others. A legacy of eugenics laws in the US is involuntary sterilization of women that occurred (occurs) in state homes and detention centers. The article I chose explores the history of women and men (a smaller number) in CA, from 1909-1974, were forcibly sterilized citing issues of "poor heredity," "overpopulation," "mental defectiveness." This was seen as “the protection of the public health” and “the health security of the citizens of every State” but the women affected were largely Mexican, Puerto Rican, Black, and/or mentally ill ("Public Health" 1130). In The Marrow Thieves, and Unwind, young people's body's are expendable and can become the property of "the state" without their consent. In Brave New World some women voluntarily offer their reproductive organs "for the good of society." Interesting how in these futures these personal violations are so common.

Describe the Setting of your novel? Does it work FOR or AGAINST your characters? The setting works against the characters because the unwinding creates conflict between multiple characters and ruins relationships.

How do your characters seem to FEEL within their world? They feel hated, unwanted, and they feel like what’s happening to them is unfair. They are also extremely confused.

Global Issues: Teen Runaways
In the 1950s and 60s, teen runaways began to be a big problem. Many abandoned middle school norms and “conventional” ways of life. In the 1970s, many acts of crimes were committed, such as drug use and prostitution. Many of the runaways have problems with their families and or their loved ones. The article says that the main reasons teens run away have to do with being in control of their own lives and to escape negative situations. The article also states that most runaway teens want to regain connection with their families, but some don’t want to at all. This issue is important in today’s society because the government/the world needs to take initiative to start helping teens in their home life or their life period so that they don’t ever contemplate running away. Like the article says, “More services need to be provided to runaway teens that help whole families address the problems at home, she concludes.” This topic is related to “Unwind” because the main characters are runaway teens and the reason they’re running away is so that they can find meaning in their life because their parents/society is making it seem like their lives don’t matter.

Dread Nation-How Viruses affect social status(3/7)- 6 (3/3) Catherine M

This article further explains how viruses and infectious diseases further separate the class divide and racial divide. In Dread Nation there is a virus that turns normal people into shamblers or zombies. Lower class peoples and non-whites have to go to training camps to learn how to kill shamblers to keep the whites safe. Before the virus there was an intermediate period of time where non-whites were free after the civil war. But once fear arose in whites regarding shamblers, then they resulted to offer up non-whites as ¨bait¨. This article explains how viruses are the main killers in our modern-society. Also, the story explains how our society is affected by these viruses. For instance, ¨The persistent infectious disease burden is likely to aggravate and, in extreme cases, may even provoke social fragmentation, economic decay, and political polarization¨. In Dread nation the extent of the virus is so high that people are unable to live in the south of the United States, because it is too overridden with the undead. This causes fear in the people higher up in power, this causes them to push the lower class/non-whites to risk their lives for them, impoverishing, endangering, and killing them. The fear caused by a virus leads to abuse of power, and the larger class divide.

6.It's bizarre considering the Black people have more experience/expertise in combat and learning now because of racism. The Whites thought they were just sending them to die eventually by the shamblers, but a new class has almost formed. This new class has educated and skilled black people.

How do the characters feel within their world? In Brave New World, the characters don't exactly get a chance to feel for themselves. Personal opinions are somewhat frowned upon. When the D.N.C is giving a tour of the facility that produces humans, the new recruits are hesitant to ask questions, and when they do, the D.N.C responds with what is basically propaganda, forcing them to agree. Almost similar to a Communist ideology.

Connection to yesterdays assignment
Reproductive rights, in short, a woman's right to have or not have a child. Often against their own will, a woman will be given the right to have or not have a child, and sometimes forcibly sterilized without consent. The government, or some may say "The Man" makes these decisions, regardless of whether it's the right thing to do or not. In Brave New World, we see that people who aren't the highest social class, or Alphas, don't have the opportunity to donate their reproductive organs to benefit society. Even if there's nothing wrong with them or their genetics that could affect a child they have. If they are deemed anything but the best of the best in society, they don't have the option to reproduce.

Beh Kyi - Unwind

Describe the Setting of your novel? Does it work FOR or AGAINST your characters?

In this world it is normal for a kid to become unwound, even before kids are born it is decided for them to be unwound. It is normal for newborns to be left at doorsteps to be unwound but everything else in their world is just like ours except for people with abnormal looking body parts that aren’t theirs in the first place. The characters in story (Lev, Connor, Risa)

Global Issue: Teen Runaway
The article states, “the choice to run away is an attempt to exert control over what the teen perceives to be an intolerable situation.” The article states reasons on why teens run away from home including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The issue is important in today’s society as there are more homeless youths and just overall a lot of more runaways in today’s society than ever. The topic “teen runaway” is related to Unwind because in the novel, Connor (a teen) decides to run away from home because of the situation he’s been put into where he has no choice but to unwind. He’s escaping for a better life than what will become of it if he stays.

How do the characters feel within their world- I think that Connor and Risa hate the world they live in, or at least the fact that kids have no control over their own lives. Lev on the other hand doesn't hate it but I don't think he loves it either.
Yesterdays assignment- Organ donation is the process in which doctors harvest a particular organ and use it to replace a patient's damaged organ. This issue is important in today's society because whenever someone is critically injured or has organ failure they will most likely need some kind of transplant whether it's an organ, skin, or just blood. Some people will go into surgery to have their organs removed to donate to someone else, and others have a legal document saying that when they die they want their organs to be donated. Organ donation is so important, every year around 36,000 lives are saved by organ donations. Organ donation is related to”Unwind”, because when someone is unwound their organs are donated to other people to save their lives. The whole premise of the book is organ donation. In the “Unwind” society you're still considered alive because all your organs are still functioning in different bodies.

The older adults that were not unwound as a kid don't have a problem with it because they have not personally experienced it. Most people just agree with the government and move on with their life if they survive. It can be thought of that the few adults that help the kids run away from their death are fighting against the government, and realize that what the government does is insane. Abortion represented in current world issues and in the book- The practice of abortion has been a heavily debated topic throughout American history. The practice started in North America during the period from 1600- 1900. In America in the 1960’s the abortion reform movement started. There are two groups that either agree or disagree with abortion. The first group are called pro-lifers. These people think that abortion should be illegal and all babies should be born and not “killed”. The other group, pro-choice, are people that believe a women should be able to pick if she should get an abortion or not.

The ongoing debate of whether it should be legal or illegal to get an abortion has many points from both sides of the argument. People on the pro- life side think that preforming an abortion at anytime during a pregnancy is as worse than killing a human. On the other side pro-choice people think that removing a undeveloped clump of cells is no difference from taking a plan b pill or taking birth control to prevent pregnancy. They argue that the “baby” is not developed enough to even be classified as a living human.
The high rates of rape and unconstitutional sex in modern society is very relevant. This leads to a lot of unwanted and unplanned pregnancies. As of September 1st 2021, abortion was voted to be against the law in the state of Texas. In the book Unwind, kids can be killed through the ages 13-18 if the parents choose to. This form of killing is like a form of abortion. The difference is the age that the “person” would be killed at. In the book there are people that agree and or disagree with the law of being unwounded. These people can represent modern day pro-lifers and people who are pro-choice.

Also when abortion is banned, the only realistic choice that is left is adoption. In America's adoption systems kids are mistreated and overcrowded. It is a bad environment to grow up in. In Unwind people who have unplanned children stork their babies on people porches. When a baby is stroked the person's porch that is on is obligated to keep the child. This leads to people raising the kid just to kill them when they turn 13.

How do the characters feel within their worlds? The characters in my story probably don't like the world they're living in. The reason I think this is because the kids have no control over their own life.

Yesterdays Assignment: Children have rights in America. It doesn't really matter what they want. They have control over making big decisions for themselves and other people such as their children. I think that the children are the ones who are aligned with those in power.

Explain how the world of your own Dystopian book has gone AWRY. (What happened for it to be in its current state?)

Many events led up to the book’s current state. Unwounding came from the 2nd civil war that was fought over reproductive rights. That is the main thing that lead up to everything. Other events are Connor’s parents signing him up to be unwound and keeping it a secret, Connor running away from home, Ariana not coming with Connor, and Connor’s parents catching him running away.

Global Issue Research
The news article talks about how teen angst is shown in a play, and why that makes it so interesting to watch. Teen angst is teens' feelings, specifically the feelings of worry or dread. I think this topic is related to Unwind because of how all of the teenagers between ages 13 and 18 are constantly worried about being chosen to be unwound. For example, the extent that Connor went to escape getting unwound. He was so worried about it that he went to the lengths of running away and going into hiding. This issue is important today because teenagers constantly worrying, dreading, or being insecure about something can affect their daily lives and future. It can cause them to potentially act differently, or make poor decisions in hopes to get rid of or avoid some of those feelings. This article explains how they visually showed teen angst in a play, and the effect it had on some characters. It shows the emotions that they went through, and how they expressed those emotions, whether it was negative or positive.

Global Issues- Runaway teens
In my article it states teens are running away from negative situations to try and give themselves a better outcome in life. The article puts a spotlight on how teenagers want more control over their lives and so they may run away, or maybe there's a deeper reason such as parental abuse and they’ve just reached a point where they can no longer handle it. Though, the article also goes over that running away could be very risky as teenagers aren’t fully developed and most probably don’t know how to live on their own. This all relates to the book Unwind because there is a group of three teenagers who are running away for the same reason. Just like the runaway teens in real life, these kids are going out with the idea of getting a better/longer life than the one the government decided to give them

Describe the Setting of your novel?

How do the characters feel within their world- I think that Risa and Connor have hated the world they live in even before they found out they would be getting unwound. You can tell that they both dislike the fact they can’t really control their own lives. Lev on the other hand started out being fine with the whole being unwind thing but I think he’s starting to realize it’s wrong.
Yesterday's assignment- During the year 2002, an estimated 1.6 million U.S. youth aged 12 to 17 had run away from home and slept on the streets. Teens that run away from home rarely have an effective support system and lack needed assistance, resources, and coping strategies for problem solving and conflict resolution. The provocations for running away are diverse and distressing, ranging from running to escape physical, emotional, and sexual abuse to having been thrown out of their homes (termed throwaways) by parents unable to cope with their child's substance abuse or sexual orientation. The older adults that were not unwound as a kid don't have a problem with it because they have not personally experienced it. It can be thought of that the few adults that help the kids run away from their death are fighting against the government, and realize that what the government does is insane.

What forms of control are being used within your novel? The article states how many different adoption systems there are and how long adoption has been around. I think unwind explores adoption because when a child is unwound by their parents, the child is basically getting given away, like for adoption. When a child gets unwound it means the parents signed a paper before the child becomes an adult to be sent away to a harvest camp, this reminds me of when the child gets sent away to an orphanage or a different family. Adoption is important in today's society so that the care for a child can be top priority to make sure the child grows up right and in the correct environment.

6. What are some of the extreme or even bizarre effects of control that you are noticing?

The extreme effects of control that I'm noticing is that whenever a kid is known to be an unwind it's like their family doesn't care for them anymore. They sign papers to have their kid be unwounded and don't seem to show emotion about it or anything. Connor is an unwind and his parents signed papers to have him be unwound and they had plane tickets to go to the Bahamas. They had three tickets exactly for his dad, mom, and little brother, it seemed to be maybe a celebration or a way to forget about Connor.

Teen Runaways
The article explains that most teen runaways get away from dangerous environments because of either physcial, emotional, or sexual abuse. They say the teens that run away most times engage with bad decisions such as unprotective sex, drugs, or gang related activities. This issue is important in today’s society because many kids could be in dangerous environments right now and have thoughts of running away or plan to do so. There are still many kids that run off to an unknown place to get away from anything bad that’s happening at home that’s affecting them. Some kids, not all of them, after running away get into bad habits like maybe drugs, doing gang related activities or having unproductive sex very often. This topic is related to the novel because the beginning of the book is Connor planning to run away with a girl named Ariana who doesn’t actually end up going with him. He runs away and meets up with other runaway kids. They run away from their dangerous environments because they’re all being taken to become unwound, meaning being disassembled and used as parts for another person. They all run away simply to survive because they know what is gonna happen to them and they don’t want it so the three runaway kids team up to survive together till their eighteen.

Global issues: organ donation
In this article it explains what Organ donation is confined to, organ donation is a medical procedure in which doctors harvest organs such as hearts, livers, or kidneys. This usually only happens when there is something partially wrong with a certain organ. For example, there could be something failing in the person's body which interacts with the rest of the body to where it could cause something else to fail, therefore, they would need to get it removed and replaced. Most of the organ donations come from living patients who don’t need a certain organ, and is given to someone who is in need. Some people can live without certain organs while others cannot.

This issue is very important in today's society because tons of thousands of people deal with medical issues they cannot control, for example, cancer is something that can cause these vital organs to fail. This is why there are certain people who choose to give their organs away when they die. This can be found on a driver's license.

This topic is VERY related to Unwind because the whole book is about how kids are getting unwound and donated to give their body parts away. The reason is completely different than what medical doctors deal with in the real world, but in this dystopian book it deals with much more than just organs.

Explain the government in your book.

Describe the Setting of your novel? Does it work FOR or AGAINST your characters?
The setting is in the not-so-far future, and i can't really say with certainty if it works against the characters or for them. However, I will say that it goes against the characters, because the government has a whole police task force dedicated to catching unwinds, and society as a whole believes that unwinds are a waste of space, and will gladly turn them in, so they are essentially alone.

Global Issues: Organ Donation
In "Unwind", the whole point of the concept of the book is forceful organ donation. This is clearly an issue, but i wasn't sure about it in the real world. Good thing that this isn't a problem in the real world, but what is a problem is who gets the organ transplants. In "Unwind", there clearly isn't a shortage of organs to go around. But in our world there are. So the ethics comes up with, say you are over seventy five, it would be impractical to give you an organ, because you mightr die soon, and it would be a waste of the organ donators precious organ. Also if you have mental disabilities, HIV/AIDS, lengthy criminal records, or history of substance abuse, many countries will not allow you to get an organ transplant. I think this is right, but others will disagree. Also, in people that should be allowed to get organ donations, who should get them? The person who needs the organs more, or someone whos quality of life would increase more by getting them? Or the perosn that has been waiting longer for the transplant or the person that needs it more, but came after them?

Describe the Setting of your novel? Does it work FOR or AGAINST your characters? The characters in A Brave New World are under the control of Ford. The rules of society are based on science and the stability and conformity of people. These rules result in the confiscation of personal freedoms like religion, speech, and the right to naturally have children. All of those things that I just listed are strictly regulated or restricted by the world government. A character in the story is disturbed by the fact that he does not have any personal freedom and thinks about what it would be like to have those said freedoms.

This book also relates to government controlled reproduction. The reason why this is true is because of how the world government of the story controls the births of people through scientific artificial production. Women are forced to take contraception to avoid pregnancy. The people have had this right taken away while also being conditioned to both accept their rights being taken away as well as keeping away from marital relationships and rely on state controlled sexual relationships. In the real world, people(more specifically women) have the right to or not to have a child as well as a relationship with whoever they want. In the real world there are still some places that have control over relationships and the rights that women have to have children or not.
