With a passion for travel photography, one of the places I keep coming back to is Japan. The Tokyo subway system is often thought of as complex and confusing, but at the same time convenient and efficient once you get to know it, which has been a relatable theme in my design journey. Often when approaching a design problem, there are many different paths to take, and many different outcomes. It can be overwhelming to sort through all of the thoughts without a process or structure. It is through this process or journey that a designer can learn quite a lot about themselves, and their design identity, which may evolve over time with each new experience.

With design as an iterative process, the final product is not always what you had in mind. Through experimentation, other ideas might be stumbled upon along the journey, which could incorporate themselves into the next iteration.

This again draws parallels to the Tokyo subway, in which at a glance the subway map may show that there are several different lines that could take you to your destination. You could take the most direct route, or take a route with several destinations along the way. Each different subway line could signify a ‘train of thought’, and each station along the way might signify the ideas that they lead to, or another iteration.

Tokyo subway map sourced from inat mapping & wayfinding:

http://www.inat.fr/metro/tokyo/

I chose to position myself facing away from the camera to portray this.

The geometry of the carpark create leading lines and a symmetry that draw the eye to the subject (me). The graphics on the shirt I chose to wear represent the streetwear fashion aesthetic that I am drawn to.

By holding a camera, I’m showing that the camera is one of my primary creative tools. The wide field of view helps to emphasise the emptiness of the carpark, which signifies a blank canvas ready to be drawn on. Whenever I enter a new space, I must train my eye to take in the details of the space, so that I can create the best that I can.
