“They came to our house first because it’s closest to the road. We thought they just wanted to talk. We thought they’d ask us some questions, and then they’d leave. So we walked out to meet them. I smelled smoke as soon as I walked outside. And they started shooting their guns. There was no time to go back. They were shooting so I couldn’t go back. And I couldn’t bring anything with me. I just ran into the forest with my children. And I forgot my baby boy. I left him in the house because I thought we were coming right back. I wanted to save him but my husband held me down. So my baby burned in the house. I’d have brought him with me, but I thought we were coming right back.”

People, their culture, and their experiences have always captivated me.“ “I grew up in the northern part of Bangladesh and from a young age, I saw a lot of people and their children from the islands. Their faces were always different from other people I had seen. They were burnt with the sun, had a lot of scratches on their faces, and their eyes were red. All those faces grabbed my attention as a child.”

I stumbled upon this photo intentionally because I was genuinely interested in other parts of the world. This encaptures a Pakistani man and his family hardships that he has to overcome. This photo reveals how raw and rigid life can be when you have to work your heart out in order to make something happen or fulfill a life task.

“My sister fell ill and her medical bills cost 30,000 rupees. My father wasn’t getting his salary on time, so we had no options. I took a loan from the brick kiln and agreed to work for them until it was paid off. Other members of my family did the same. We thought it would only take three months. But when I went to leave, they told me I owed them 90,000 rupees. I couldn’t believe it. They told me I couldn’t leave. It’s like quicksand. They only pay you 200 rupees per 1000 bricks, and it all goes to them, and the debt keeps growing."

I'm in the same boat as that girl, who's going through something my parents didn't have the opportunity for.

"“I was never educated because I began working when I was a child. I was always envious of the boys who got to wear uniforms and go to school. This is her first month of school. She comes home and tells me exactly what happened, everyday. I love it.

“I left Belize when I was 12 or 13, just as all my friends were getting swept up into gangs. The gangs would get kids to do the dirty work, because they knew the kids wouldn’t go to jail. I actually have an old photograph of the group of friends I used to hang out with– there were seven us. After I came to America, they were all killed in the exact order that they were standing in that photograph.” Photo by Brandon Stanton.

This photograph stood out to me, due to how resilient and determined the look of this man’s eyes was, for I received an instant sense that he is extremely loving and devoted to his child. Men alone with infants isn’t a typical sight, and I was drawn to the compassion that is being shown towards this baby.

“That’s a mural in Alphabet City. I saw those four characters and thought it would make an awesome shot. They were skeptical at first, but in the end they wound up holding hands.” I was originally drawn to this photo because of the bright colorful background. I liked how the people kind of mirrored the mural. Then after reading the caption, I learned that these people probably didn't know each other since he says that they were skeptical, but eventually they held hands. I like how he was able to get these strangers to work together for his photo.

i chose this image because of the happiness and relief that this picture shows. the mom and dad doing everything they can to raise the child and make him happy

"In the past four months alone, we've had 12,000 refugees stop here. We know because we've counted the sandwiches that we've handed out. They show up battered and beaten. We set up this rest area along the road to hand out sandwiches, juice and water. One night we had 1,000 people here. You could see nothing but heads. We're not professionals, just volunteers. The families break our heart the most. They show up with no money, no papers, and no hotels. Sometimes it's raining and they have nothing but cardboard over their heads. They have nothing for their children, and we know how hard it is to raise kids even in standard conditions. Our son hasn't seen very much of us recently. Even when we are together, the phone is always ringing and we are absent in mind. Recently he asked if we could build a big boat and send the refugees somewhere that there is no war."

“Mickey had always been a bit of a miracle. He’d lived with HIV for so long that the doctors were studying him. He used to come back smiling from every appointment, and tell me there was nothing to report. One time I asked to go with him, just to see for myself. They ran a routine test that day to see if the medication was damaging his organs. And the results showed that his liver was failing. The specialist said he had 48 hours to live. I sobbed all night in the parking garage. But Mickey told me not to worry: ‘I’ve got to finish that mural,’ he said. ‘So I’m going to get out of here.’ And he was right. He somehow recovered and they let him come home. He worked on the mural every day. I showered him with gifts during this time. I got him a set of nice towels. And I put a lemon tree in his living room, so that his whole apartment smelled like lemons. He kept promising that we’d go to Puerto Vallarta, but I think both of us knew it would never happen. When he finally finished the mural, it looked amazing. But Mickey had grown so weak. I was at his apartment every day: drawing his bath, fixing his meals, making sure he took his medication. He decided to go to hospice on the day I changed his diaper for the first time. I told him that he’d just be there for a few weeks. Just long enough to build up a little strength, so that he could come home. It was the only time I ever lied to him. He was given a nice little room with a view of the garden. And he held on for two more weeks. The last thing he did was apologize. He could barely speak, but he said: ‘I’m so sorry, Robert. I know how hard this will be. Because I remember when Michael died.’ I told him not to worry. Because grief was such a small price to pay for our friendship. At the very end his eyes were wide open. He kept staring at the ceiling, like he was seeing something. And even though he never said it, I know it was Michael. Michael was up there, saying: ‘Don’t be scared. It’s time to come here.’ Finally Mickey closed his eyes. And he started taking these long breaths. With long pauses. And the pauses kept getting longer. Until he took one last deep breath, and he didn’t breathe out.”

I chose this photo because I like how the face isn't shown but there is still a story to be told. The depth perception is like what we have been learning.
"I'm trying to be an actor. Right now I'm on the way to a call back, which is good. But it's for a low budget promo video. And the day rate only applies to the shoot. Even if I get it, it'll barely be minimum wage. And that's a problem. Because I don't have one of these situations where my parents are comfortable. I can't just go home and take a break from the world. Everyone in our family has to chip in, so I'm not able to go very long without a paycheck. There have been periods where I've stopped auditioning for months while I work another job. It's been years of not being fully in one thing or another. I'm 36 now, and I'm in the same place I was when I was 28. Living paycheck-to-paycheck. Living with roommates. Not much changing in my lifestyle. So I've been asking myself a lot of questions. Can I afford to still be in this place when I'm 44? Do I even want this enough to stay in the hustle? Does anyone deserve something they won't go after 100 percent? And if the answer is 'no,' what does that mean for someone like me, who doesn't have the stability or confidence to go after anything 100 percent?"

I chose this photo because it stood out to me. Something that I could relate too. And the story that stands behind it.

“I had very thick hair as a child. But I was also very tender-headed, so I hated getting my hair combed. The first time my mother took me to the salon, I screamed bloody murder. So for the rest of my childhood she did my hair herself. And it always looked good. I grew to believe that my hair was my best quality. I could have on my best make-up, and my best outfit, but if my hair wasn’t done right, the whole thing was off. After college my boyfriend discovered the first bald spot on the back of my head. Soon afterwards I was diagnosed with an auto-immune condition. The doctor told me that I could eventually lose all of my hair. I was devastated. I immediately called my mother, and she told me we were going to fight it. We prayed and prayed. We kept finding new oils and new shampoos. But the bald spot only grew bigger. My mother started doing my hair again, just like when I was a kid. And whenever a new spot appeared, she’d invent a new style to hide it. For the longest time no one knew. But it was so much stress. I’d panic if someone was behind me in the elevator. Dating was the worst. It was like: ‘Oh my gosh. How am I going to keep this a secret?’ Some mornings I’d call my mom in a moment of desperation. I’d tell her: ‘I can’t do this anymore. I’m going to shave it off.’ But she’d talk me out of it. She’d tell me: ‘Don’t worry. We’re going to figure this out.’ But we never did. It only got worse and worse. By the age of thirty-one I was in a really dark place. And I decided to go on a fast because I needed some clarity from God. And that’s when I made the decision. The first person I told was my mom. She’d been telling me not to do it for so long, because she was scared too. But I needed her to be OK with it. I needed her to finish this journey with me. Everyone in the hair salon was nervous. The person in the next chair was nervous. Even the hairdresser was nervous. She was like: ‘Do you really want to do this?’ But then she took out the clippers, and began to shave it off. My mother was the first one to break the silence. After the first pass of the clippers, she looked closely at my head. And then she announced to the whole salon: ‘It’s going to look good!’”
