Interview Challenge by Eboni Williams

Reflect on and react to what you learned throughout this process. Base your reflection/reaction on the interview AND the reading assignments. Also consider how what you’ve learned may impact your decision-making in the future.

In particular, address these questions: How does what you’ve learned in theory align with what is occurring in the classroom? Is what you see in practice commensurate with your assessment beliefs?

Mrs. Cumbo talked about discussing new students with the previous teachers. She mentioned to get to know the students yourself as well and not just take into account what a previous teacher has talked about without getting to know the student yourself. I feel this is benefical because things can change with students year to year. I will take into consideration previous teachers concerns but also get to know the students myself as well.

Listening to the recording, I liked how Mrs. Cumbo responded to my question by saying the purpose of reporting students performance is seeing what the teacher can do to reach the child. I feel it was good to hear that the teachers come together for meetings to discuss strategies to help different students needs. It is great to get different opinions from different teachers because one strategy that doesn't work for you, another teacher may have a strategy that can help as well.

In regards to retaining students, The students performance should be recorded throughout the year. This is evidence on how the student is performing. The administration and the students parent should be informed on this as well. I know from my past experiences, teachers never discussed what was going on with the students to the parent until the end of the year. This is not a great idea because it seems as if all of a sudden the child isn't doing well. I feel Mrs. Cumbo was right by saying keeping the parents in the loop because there can always be things the parents can do to help prevent this "retainment" from happening as well.

Teachers have training on word work such as word walls and working on how to teach third grade math effectively. I think this is great for teachers to see different strategies they can implement in the classroom. I think by attending meetings like this, it will help me know what to add to my own instruction.

As I interviewed Mrs. Cumbo she made it very clear that she doesn't draw an opinion or conclusion about a student based on his/her grading. As she quoted "Getting To Know" your students is very important. Mrs. Cumbo also mentioned that she does reach out to the previous teacher just to gain knowledge and feedback about the student. She made it very clear that she understands that students grow over the summer and tend to mature so she can't make any decisions based on their grades, She also understands that students learn and perform differently based on the teacher as well.

I for one don't like the fact that there are only a limited amount of questions on quizzes which doesn't allow students much room for growth. In my question to Mrs. Cumbo I asked about the grading scale to see how they come up with them and if they are the same for every third grade class. In Mrs. Cumbo's response she made it clear that as a grade level they come together and make a rubric. Everyone follows the grading scale and if by chance students don't perform well they are prone to give a curve or give students a re-take.

As Mrs. Cumbo said, she does not let race, class, and gender biases impact her grading. She does not give the boys harder assignments than the girls for example. She is fair in her grading as I believe every teacher should be.She supports students who have weaker educational backgrounds in the ways they need to be successful. I know that studies show that teachers tend to grade with bias without even realizing they are doing it majority of the time. It is important to always grade based on students work and knowledge, not their race, class, or gender.

This question was a big question for me. As a student and a teacher I was excited to hear Mrs. Cumbos answer to if she allows test/assignment retakes. In the interview she stated that she did allow her students to go back and look at what they got wrong with a chance to get a better grade. She says that she builds a positive classroom based off of growing and never saying that they "can't do it". She emphasizes to her students that they can do it and mistakes are just a part of growing in their education. I loved this answer and plan to use things like this in my future classroom as well.

In terms of what I have learned vs. what is occurring in the classroom; it is the same in some ways but different in others. In theory I learned that the proper way to assess students is through a test. What is actually happening in many classrooms these days, such as Mrs. Cumbos, is that assessment is used in multiple different ways. Teachers are beginning to stray away from the traditional tests at the end of their unit. Based on what I see in practice aligns with my beliefs that assessments should no longer be through tests. This is not always an accurate portrayal of what students have learned. Assessments can be fun as we'll.

I have always wanted to know the insight on this question from a teacher's perspective. I say that because I know as a student I never fully understood the purpose of homework, like yes extra practice but you could never be sure if that student is actually the one doing and understanding it the work. I really loved listening to Mrs. Cumbo answer this question not only because she gave me insight that I have always wanted, but because she was very honest with her answer and saying that she does not believe or she can't be sure if homework tells her what her students do or do not know.
