Throughout Mona's life, she's struggled with finding her own identity. Growing up her father warned her about drugs and gangs and to not get involved with any of that nonsense. High School was the start of Mona's involvement in gangs. She soon realized after running the streets and then experiencing the death of a close friend, Oso, She knew she didn't want to be involved anymore. Mona said, "It grazed me as I fell to the ground. I was inches from death if that much. My knees got weak." This quote explains how it felt inside of her and the result she had from his death. The death of Oso made a huge impact on Mona which changed her point of view and it was the final straw. Mona's dream was to work at the PD, she worked hard but there was a wall coming in between her. Mona's abusive relationship. Mona had a child and she knew that this wasn't any good for her child. Mona dialed the shelter and got the help she need for her and her family. Finding an identity for Mona wasn't easy, It took lots of hardships, battles, and even losing friends.

Mona had difficulty with herself pursuing her career as a police officer. What made her self-doubt begin was with her past gang member friends. They would always make comments when Mona specifically said, "I want to be a cop." This quote represents how she wanted to be something but others' opinions made her rethink. The words they responded would affect her and she said she was just joking. Although she was not joking, the words they said made her rethink her decision and let them get to Monas' head.

Mona has come a long way in her life. She was first involved in gangs as a young teenager, getting into pregnancy, an abusive relationship and so much more. At one point Mona had been stuck in which what felt like forever to her but soon after she overcame these obstacles. From having children, leaving the gang, and leaving her abusive ex-husband for the sake of Mona and her children. Mona takes pride in the tattoo she had gotten of her ex-husband because it is a symbol that represents all the obstacles and hardships Mona has overcome and done. "For better or worse, it defiantly shows where I have been and who I am. The image is a pierced but undying heart and it coils down my wrist. It is my past, and I am it." This quote perfectly describes how she takes complete dignity in what she's done and who she's become now.

Mona was always having to do everything around the house. She never insisted on doing anything for herself. As time passed, Mona's abuse never did. She had always had hopes that as it grew bigger and bigger, she thought it would eventually get better. Mona cared for her child and knew what had to be done. She called the shelter and sought help for her family. The woman on the phone was concerned that someone had been following Mona and her child which could've led to danger to others so she told Mona to drive somewhere else and use the phone booth to call. She said specifically, "Okay, drive to the next city and find a safe spot to call us from a phone booth there." This quote explains what the woman on the phone said from the shelter and the steps Mona had to do to get to safety. Which I think is very important because it was the start of hope. Then and There Mona knew everything was going to be okay for her children.

At the beginning of both Mona and Frank's relationship, it was like every other, normal, loving, typical love. It all when downhill when Frank got involved with drugs, PCP and Heroin to be specific. It became horrible for Mona, she was manipulated and emotionally/mentally abused. The drugs led to Frank not caring for the family or Mona anymore. The drugs made a huge crash to the relationship. Frank would even hit Mona while she was pregnant. He's even burned and ripped Mona's book because of jealousy. Frank even said, " all those putos you used to sleep with." referring to her "ex-boyfriends" when in reality they were close friends or even friends that have passed away. Drugs made a huge collision between the two.
