Interscope records was founded by Ted Field and Jimmy Iovine in the year 1990. At the same time of the start of the record company, Field founded Interscope communications, a production company. Iovine before starting interscope was a well known producer, being responsible for artists such as U2 and Patti Smith. Due to such an established persona, the company had no trouble finding financial backing as Time Warner offered them monetary support and publicity. Interscope gained a large part of it's popularity due to the fact that they are notably recognised for Dr Dre's 'The Chronic' album. At this time, Interscope was the only distributor that agreed to help with the album, this brought Interscope masses of success as 'The Chronic' was one of the biggest albums of the decade, driving a large profit for Interscope. This brought about a new age of gangsta rap in the 1990s. Following on from this, Interscope began to produce other, more alternative artists that no other company would take on such as the band Nine Inch Nails.

However, in the mid 90s, Interscope took a bad turn due to it's relation with gangsta rap and got blamed by some for the police shootings in Texas. Another problem for Interscope was a woman named C. Delores Tucker, a shareholder in some of Time Warner's Stock. In the mid 90s, she was incredibly against the release of an album known as 'Dogg Food' which featured lyrics of extreme misogyny and violence. However due to Time Warner's contract with Interscope, they were not able to censor any of their releases, causing them to end their contract. This was not the end for interscope as in 1996, the company had songs on the top 4 spots of the Billboard Charts, showing that they hadn't given up. Interscope was then owned by EMI, BMG, Polygram, and MCA. MCA then became Universal Music Group.

In 1998, the Universal Music Group parent company Seagram took on Polygram Records. MCA's Geffen Records and PolyGram's A&M Records were merged into Interscope, and in early 1999, Interscope Records began operating under the umbrella of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, with Iovine and Field serving as co-chairmen. In 2001, Field left to develop his own company. In November 2003 Universal Music Group acquired DreamWorks Records and in 2004 it was merged into Interscope Geffen A&M. The label's artists were divided between Geffen and Interscope. Among others, Interscope inherited Blink-182, The All-American Rejects, and Nelly Furtado.

In 2006, Dre and Iovine established Beats Electronics. Dre had been approached by his attorney to start a line of sneakers, and when he told Iovine about the idea, Iovine said: "You know speakers, not sneakers." 'Beats by Dr. Dre Studio Headphones' were introduced in January 2008 at the annual Consumer Electronics Show. In October 2012, John Janick was named president and COO of Interscope Geffen A&M. Iovine's attention had increasingly turned to Beats, which dominated the headphone market with 2012 revenues of $512 million, causing him to leave Interscope records.

Interscope records has an incredibly notorious and large history. What is also good about the company is that it covers a wide range of genres, especially alternative/ pop which is what Maroon 5 fits under. Interscope also features a lot of artists that target our audience of teenagers such as Jessie Ware, Ellie Goulding, Lady Gaga, and Carly Rae Jepson.
