"Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for?" page 33

This is the first evidence in the book in where I've really noticed that Eliezer is questioning his faith in Judaism. The thoughts in the quote above are the reflection of how he feels knowing that him and so many others are being marched to their death. It's reasonable to question faith, in an almighty and merciful being, who supposedly controls everything, when surrounded by death and tragedy. It's the same reason that my brother and I continue to question our beliefs in God and his existence.

I believe that it is perfectly normal to question your belief in a God when surrounded by tragedy. I personally struggle with belief all the time, and know several religious people who also struggled and had moments of doubt, even without tragedy as a catalyst. It's hard to believe in a merciful ruler while you watch people suffer and die.

Imagine you're in Eliezer's situation. You're walking into the camp, knowing that you might die, and you see these innocent children. They've seen the same thing you have. They'll meet the same fate you will. How could you believe in a merciful ruler when this is happening?

The same as picture 1. There are literal children being held like cattle and marched to their death. Believing in God is extremely hard when you see this much tragedy.
