The thoughts in the quote above are the reflection of how he feels knowing that him and so many others are being marched to their death. It's reasonable to question faith, in an almighty and merciful being, who supposedly controls everything, when surrounded by death and tragedy. I personally struggle with belief all the time, and know several religious people who also struggled and had moments of doubt, even without tragedy as a catalyst.
