I'm a visual learner and can produce better work by seeing the source in front of me, which is why mood boards work best for me. I have also included a video of my own personal sketchbook which I like to call a ‘polished junk journal.’ I am constantly documenting, visually taking things in, and presenting it in a slightly chaotic way. I have made textile samples of work inspired by artists and designers I have previously researched for my projects. This then creates a general idea of what materials work well and what techniques I would like to take further. Fashion illustrations help me see what my outcome could look like, they demonstrate unique styles and garment types. My work shown here is a part of my project ‘Gothic Hippie’ which focuses on old Victorian fashion and bohemian patterns and designs. I chose to look at body image, beauty standards and mental health issues as a lot of people (my generation especially) suffer with. I looked at designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Karin Van der Linden and Coco Chanel. I wanted to create a bold message and clearly show what I am trying to deliver. The corset I made was a part of my garment construction project, I then enhanced this by adding my own skirt to the bottom to complete it as a dress. I am personally modelling in some photographs, but all styling and editing was done by me. These types of photographs are my favourite to create as they evolve around fashion and the way things are perceived, I love using old-fashioned accessories such as pearls and cameos in my work as it contrasts massively to the modern-day style, we see today. My vape advertisement image is a part of my photography project ‘personal opinions’ and I was inspired by old sexist commercial posters in the 50s. I also wanted to represent how although smoking was promoted at a time it has also been frowned upon for females making them look ‘unladylike’. I then took this and made it modern for today's circumstances.
