Manan is no longer a true caretaker or guardian to Arha anymore. Whereas Tenar used to put up with Manan’s acts of endearment, she no longer cares. She treats Manan with disrespect and insults.  In this shifting world, Tenar questions her loyalty to the religion. Tenar may never have wanted to be the One Priestess, but being inducted into the Kargad religion, that’s all she ever knew. Sigmund’s Freud psychoanalytic works discuss some subjects relevant to ToA. “In Sigmund Freud’s book, Civilization and its Discontents, Freud discusses how many of our basic desires are at odds with what is best for society. This is why certain laws are created to prohibit certain actions. There is a clear discontent between the people in the Kargad society, and what may be best for civilization.  Penthe, for example, wants to be free from her training to be a priestess. We even see some of the discontent in Tenar in recent chapters. She is reevaluating her position as the High Priestess.
