Unlike other early cultures in the North, Inuits didn't have a set leader. They lived in small family groups that would live and hunt together. They shared food with each other, but would often claim food sources and game for themselves.

Women headed the family for the most part, because men were always away on hunting trips leaving the women to do things around the community. Families were about 5 or 6 people. Marriage was a big part of Inuit culture; some were arranged, but most were by choice. Women married at 14 or 15, while men had to wait until 20.

Inuits believed in animism, which is the belief that everything, living or not, has a spirit. They did not really have any "gods" that they worshiped, but they did have powerful spirits. Bad weather, illness, and bad hunts were blamed on angry spirits, and they believed human souls could be stolen. They found everything to be sacred since it all had a soul. The only people who could control spirits were religious leaders who used rattles, charms, and dances to communicate and summon spirits. They would make offerings to the spirits. They made a lot of masks and carvings, as well as Inukshuks made by balancing rocks. The Inukshuk is the Inuit symbol for "the way".
