In September 2018 we completed our 3 years of co-writing when our family-school partnership book was published - Crossing Literacy Bridges. What a journey! In Reading 810, Spring 2019 session 2, we will explore 2 chapters from the book.

Each semester I get to learn at West Middlesex Elementary, PA., with some inspiring classroom teachers. I take my preservice teachers to their magical book room, filled with children's books. Teachers freely borrow books for their Guided Reading or Reading Workshop groups. Readers soar beyond reading to answer a teacher's questions when they are invited to explore through books, not basal readers.

Dr. Karen Matis, who you likely met in your Education 940 research graduate course, is a key learning partner. Karen teaches 7th grade English at Shenango Middle School. Each fall semester I work with Karen and my secondary preservice teachers to help them broaden their literacy lens for secondary students. I am slowly discovering the power of disciplinary literacy for math, English, biology, Spanish and history majors. What a challenge for me to think beyond literacy learning for elementary readers.

Dr. Rene Pico, whom you will meet in your ELL graduate class, is a new learning partner. This summer Rene and I explored Puerto Rican children's books. I discovered the wonders of bioluminescent water, the reasons why there are 3 different colors of blue in various versions of the Puerto Rican flag and so much more. I need partners like Rene who help me look way past my current lens on the world.
