Similarly, the Red Scare was a period of time of hysteria over the perceived threat of communism. Miller concealed his criticism of McCarthyism by writing plays and books.

Phillip Mahn 10/3/2022

Arthur Miller, being born during the starting years of World War I and living fully through World War II, was highly knowledgeable of the events that led to and through the mid 20th century. Due to his experience, Arthur had strong opinions on the ideas of McCarthyism and the mass hysteria regarding communism. McCarthyism is more or less the idea or practice of (usually) falsely accusing someone of a deed or crime due to fear or other circumstances. An example would be accusing someone of being a communist because they wore red during the Red Scare (circa ~1915-1920 & ~1947-1957). The Crucible (1953) is about a time very similar to the Red Scare, the Salem Witch Trials. A time when early settlers where scared out of their minds (literally in some cases) about what they didn't know. This lead to many people being falsely accused of being witches simply because of their habits or personal belongings. The book itself is meant to reflect the similarities between the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare where many people would be punished for no reason.

How I see the connection between Arthur Miller, McCarythism, Red Scare, and The Crucible is because Arthur Miller uses The Crucible to investigate the terror and panic that infused the American Society throughout the Red Scare. Also the McCarythism because they used the Salem Witch Trials as a tale.
