Getting to know him...

Born in 1980 in Ireland, Richard Mosse is known for being a contemporary documentary photographer. He is known for his distinctive and immersive works that explore complex political and social issues. One of his most notable projects is "Infra," where he used a discontinued military surveillance film to capture images of conflict zones in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The film creates a powerful and disorienting visual experience. Mosse's work often challenges traditional documentary conventions, using aesthetics to engage viewers in a deeper contemplation of the subject matter and the complexities of the human experience in conflict zones.

His art techniques...

He uses infrared film which makes green colours (mostly vegetation in this case) appear as flagrant hues of red/pink.

What makes his art so special...

He takes pictures of the nature in The Democratic Republic of Congo that has been ruined or torn apart by war.

Pieces including the human body... ⟶

He also includes certain pictures of people such as soldiers, children, etc. One of his very popular pieces that showcase the human body is: "Pink Congo, Death Is More Than Just A Number". In this piece, we can see pictures of soldiers wearing camouflage items on their heads to go unseen, we can see their firearms, skulls, young men, and babies but no women are included in the artwork.

What is it?

"Infra Man-Size" is a captivating photograph by Richard Mosse from his "Infra" series. Using infrared film in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mosse transforms the lush landscape into surreal hues. In this particular image, the human figure, likely a man, is integrated into the altered environment. The distorted colours create an otherworldly atmosphere, prompting contemplation on the juxtaposition of conflict and the natural world. Mosse's innovative approach challenges conventional perspectives, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities of human experience in conflict zones.

Link to the course...

It shows the socio-political engagement, a key theme in every society to ever exist. Richard Mosse's innovative use of infrared film challenges traditional documentary norms, reflecting on conflict's impact. This artwork becomes a poignant case study for exploring how artists navigate complex themes, redefining perspectives on human experience.

"Richard Mosse." Broken Spectre,

https://www.richardmosse.com .

What is it?

"The Enclave" is a poignant art installation by Richard Mosse, capturing the haunting landscapes and human experiences in war-torn Eastern Congo. Mosse employs a unique infrared film to transform the lush surroundings into surreal hues, offering a disorienting yet compelling visual narrative. The series, encompassing photography and film, provides an immersive exploration of the complex socio-political issues and the profound impact of conflict on the people and environment in the region. The project challenges traditional documentary norms, creating a powerful and thought-provoking visual experience.

Link to the course...

As we experimented with photography in the course as well as the fact that most of the pieces we observe in class are results of photohgraphy, I think these pieces link themselves to the course by the use of colour filters and by exemplifying how Richard Mosse's innovative approach transcends traditional documentary forms. His use of infrared film redefines artistic perspectives on conflict, offering a unique blend of creativity and social commentary. His ability to navigate the boundaries of artistic expression in documenting the human experience in war zones becomes a rich source for exploring the interplay between creativity, socio-political engagement, and the artist's role in interpreting complex realities.

"Richard Mosse." Broken Spectre,

https://www.richardmosse.com .
