From the Industrial Revolution to now.....

A way I can relate to the industrial revolution is through child labor. Children were forced to work long and hard days just like adults back then. After the government had realized how bad it was, they made it illegal. If it weren't for the faults in the past, I may be working hard in factory, instead of sitting in a school taking a selfie.

Monopoly (vocab word)

A monopoly is where a single business controls a whole section of industry. This is showing the monopoly of Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller. Monopolies are not good for they have only one producer of an item, which means the quality may go down and the price may go up. The government eventually stepped in and made a law called the Sherman Anti-Trust Act which made monopolies illegal.

Farms to Factories (main idea 1)

A big shift in the way of life at the turn of the century was farms to factories. Generally, before the revolution, most people worked on farms. When the industrial revolution began, factories started popping up everywhere. This led to a flurry of people that moved to urban cities to work in factories on new machines. Work conditions got increasingly worse in these factories.

This made western settlement as it is today. The government signed contracts with to different building companies to start building a railroad that stretched from Chicago to Sacramento. This connected the country from east to west. It helped grow the economy. Regions started to specialize and instead of economies being local, they were now national, thanks to the railroad.

Henry Bessemer, one of the greatest inventors of the industrial revolution. He came up with a simple and cheap process that changed building forever. How to change iron into steel. Although he created this process, he is not the most famous steel business man. Andrew Carnegie is more popular steel business man, creating a ginormous steel business out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

George Pullman, the creator of the Pullman train car. This train car helped grow the transcontinental railroad. Before he created this, traveling by train was extremely uncomfortable. These sleeping cars made the trip more relaxing and inviting for new western pioneers. Pullman went on to create a workmen's town in Illinois. The workers eventually went on strike due to low wages, and expensive living in this town.

What interested me the most about this unit is how women were not included in any accolades. Women I'm sure were also a big part of the Industrial Revolution. They especially helped after the invention of the typewriter and the telephone, becoming secretaries to the business men. The unsung heroes of the business world. In class, we only learned of one women. While this woman did a lot for our country, I know there were others too
