Structure: How could the eight minutes be organized?

Take some time to organize your commentary.

Always start with close reading/ direct evidence from the text and use that as a hook or springboard from which to draw broader connections to text and context as a whole

Use the conventions of the text to structure a logical analytical response - setting, structure/ plot, character/ relationships, conflict/ climax, narrator/ POV, style and literary device employed, theme

link to context where appropriate and focus on how this knowledge allows for better understanding of the selected passage/text.

Read the whole extract and then go back and make notes or underline the points that you would like to talk about.

You could start talking by connecting the extract to the work and talk briefly about the setting.

Comment on the techniques that the author uses to create meaning in the specific extract, for example the use of language.

In the end try to make a comment on why you think this extract is significant.

3. Conclusions: What advice would you give about ways to conclude the commentary?

In the end try to make a comment on why you think this extract is significant.

a brief summary of key points raised

a catchy and original hook to keep the listener/ examiner thinking after the commentary concludes

4. How can students best prepare for the discussion? What kind preparations should you make for conducting this aspect of the internal assessment?

Review discussions/ tasks completed in class related to the text

Reread the texts looking for your own key passages - what passages would you select for commentary if you were the examiner and why?

practice the task in your own time - select a section and prepare for 5-10 minutes before extemporizing with partner/ peers/ family as audience - seek feedback

give students a chance to practice in class based on a passage / text they are familiar with but which you will NOT be using for this assessment

Practice giving commentary before the actual presentation. Practicing will allow the you to work on any deficits beforehand.

Record yourself giving commentary.
