<title>Quantum leadership is a leadership style where the leader leads from the future standpoint. With quantum leadership, the leader must look forward and focus on the future, while leading and living in the present tense. It also takes into account the whole person and the whole process, as well as how each individuals and specific aspect of the environment relates to the universe. Quantum leadership can be related to quantum physics in the way that everything is connected. While keeping this aspect in mind, the leader must understand that each action has a connection to the next to achieve success (Watson, Porter-O’Grady, Horton-Deutsch, &amp; Malloch, 2018). Quantum leadership is based on a “FuturePerfect Organization”, with the ultimate goal of achieving that through leadership of a company, organization, group of people, etc. The FuturePerfect organization is an organization built around high-performance, high standards, and high achievement quality through the individuals it encompasses. The quantum leadership style strives to achieve those high-standards through leadership.Quantum leadership occurs through an individual focusing on the future while being mindful of the current environment. Successful quantum leadership is achieved through the leader guiding individuals into the future state, while also allowing them to be successful in the context they are in. The aspect of leading from the future in the quantum leadership model requires two specific steps. The first step is a transformation of the leader from a “linear-adaptive” mindset to a “creative-adaptive” mindset. The leader must expand his/her knowledge and being challenging thinking in a way that can adapt to the future state. The second step is a “quantum leap”. This states that the leader is viewing oneself and the individuals he/she is leading as already being in that future state and thinking and behaving as though the FuturePerfect state has already been achieved. Additional information on this style can be found in the 2007 text, Quantum Leadership: A Resource for Health Care Innovation, by Tim Porter-O’Grady and Kathy Malloch.</title>

<title>While doctorate-level nursing students have found learning and applying quantum leadership concepts challenging due to its diversion from more traditional approaches (Montgomery, 2011), the approach is uniquely adaptable to a quickly changing world, especially within the medical field. Leaders applying the quantum approach acknowledge that their working environment is continually changing and work to create a flexible work environment where team members can contribute in areas that are compatible with their personal talents and skill sets (Curtin, 2013). Team leaders should work to create an environment where other members feel empowered to express their own strengths and embrace the changes that new situations bring (O’Rielley, 2008). Montomery, 2011: The authors of this article explore the development of leadership skills in doctorate-level nursing students, especially those that will allow the students to practice effectively in a changing and unpredictable work environment. The authors conclude that projects which promote exploration of complex issues and critical thinking to create solutions is effective in promoting the growth of good nurse leaders.Curtin, 2013: Quantum leadership is compared to traditional leadership approaches. In traditional leadership, a hierarchy of management is perceived is unchangeable and job boundaries are inflexible. The authors suggest that this approach is incompatible with unpredictable changes. A more compatible approach to deal with change is the quantum approach, where hierarchies are flexible and workers take on responsibility are the context demands.O’Rielley, 2008: This article emphasizes the importable of a worker’s context in making them a great leader or leaving them unchanged. While some naturally have characteristics which make them more likely to accept leadership roles, social expectations and environmental demands play a large shaping role. Managers should be aware of this and respond accordingly to develop a strong team.Watson, Porter-O’Grady, Horton-Deutsch, &amp; Malloch, 2018The authors describe and compare two seemingly disparate perspectives of healthcare leadership: quantum leadership and caring science. They describe quantum leadership as comparable to Newtonian paradigm approaches, where things are ever-changing. Caring science promotes a moral-ethical obligation for healthcare workers to maintain dignity. It holds that interpersonal concern should be shown to do this. They conclude that the two paradigms are highly compatible and are highly effective when used in a healthcare environment.</title>

<title>The University of Maryland’s nurse practitioner program incorporates two courses which promote leadership based on quantum concepts: “Complex Health Care Systems” and “Leadership and Interprofessional Collaboration”. Students are introduced to the issues which complicate thought processes which many believed to be straightforward. They are encouraged through assignments to wrestle with related issues and suggest solutions using critical reasoning. Program administrators promote these types of assignments as they foster development of NPs who will be able to flourish in a complex and continually changing healthcare environment as they emerge as nurse leader (Montgomery, 2011).</title>

<title>Looking to pop culture and today’s society, we see examples of quantum leadership, specifically within healthcare, in the television show Grey’s Anatomy. Each of the main characters displays their own individual and unique leadership style that contributes to the overall workplace environment. One of the main characters, Meredith Grey, displays specific quantum leadership qualities in her ability to envision the future of medicine, understand and interpret the chaos of everyday life within the hospital setting, and work with her peers to “leap” into behaviors that are future-minded and will create change. </title>

<title>Quantum leadership applies specifically to leadership in healthcare and the relationships within the workplace. The skills associated with this style of leadership include a willingness to learn, looking not just to the end product but to the process as a whole, and adapting to the constant changes in the workplace. Another important piece of this leadership style is the ability to foster an environment of transformation and growth for everyone to succeed. In today’s culture, we see this style emerging more within the profession of nursing. Nursing leadership emphasizes these quantum leadership qualities and helps to define the journey of adapting to the ever-changing healthcare environment while maintaining connected relationships with fellow co-workers. (O’Reilly, 2008) </title>
