La sequía amenaza al rancho australiano de Timber Creek. Se acerca el rodeo, y Danny , de trece años, está decidido a ocupar el lugar de su hermano mayor Jonny, que ayudaba a su padre con el ganado y murió en un accidente el año anterior. 

En casa de los Dawson, estan muy tristes desde que Jonny no está. No se habla de la situación de su hermana Sissy: está embarazada con catorce años y no quiere decir quién es el padre. Entonces llega a Timber Creek una joven inglesa para ayudar en casa, Liz. Al principio Danny la odia, le parece que es un estorbo y que no encaja en la vida del rancho, pero las circunstancias serán cada vez más adversas y su relación cambiará cuando Danny comprenda que para afrontar las dificultades lo mejor es unir fuerzas.
