Jackson L., Franklan T., Victor G.

The Gettysburg, and the First inaugural address

1. Carefully analyze each paragraph of each speech. What are some of the similarities between the two speeches?

In the first passage in paragraph two, Abe Lincoln talks about what this country has endured, and in the second paragraph FDR relates to what that country was going through with what Abe Lincoln was talking about with war. They both show their admiration for this country. They also took place during america's bad times like with war and the great depression.

2.Look at the vocabulary in both speeches. Are some of the important motivating words used in both speeches?

There is not many similar motivational words but there is one motivational word used in both passages. Endure/Endured. It is found in paragraph 2 in the first passage and paragraph 2 in the second passage repeatedly. They both use it in similar ways talking about what this country has endured and how great it is.

3. What is the main job of the president when he/she is making a speech? Did both of the presidents who wrote these speeches attain that goal effectively? Use textual evidence.
A president's job when speaking is to inspire and motivate the audience. They also sometimes are trying to persuade them to think differently or to have a open mind. They may also be trying to address an issue that is happening in the US. The two presidents did meet the standards for a good speech, inspiring the people and showing leadership. They used the proper grammar and language when speaking. For example in FDR's speech he talks in a firm and confident manner, which helps make the speech effective, and what helps him inspire the people of america.

1E: Both of the speeches are talking about problems facing America and how they could help fix it. But some of the differences were that one was talking about war and how they would make it end. The other one was about how it would be supporting and helping people but go against the great depression"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself".

2E: There are words from both speeches that make people feel motivated because it says in the story that they are both talking how they will face problems in the government and it both of the speeches say that this "Nation will endure as it has endured" and the other speech says that the "Nation that we can long endure" they are both talking about how the that we will long endure and that we are dedicated to stand up for our country and that we are conceived.

5) How does the usage of their specific words, phrasing, and punctuation, promote the tone, meaning, and mood of each speech? Use specific examples from the texts of both speeches to support your answer.

Answer: The Gettysburg Address has very emotional and strong meaning words. The words inspire and motivate people across America that the civil war was very devastating to the country. And Lincoln believes that after this war we as a nation will have a birth of freedom. Some examples are "Dedicated, hallow, consecrate, devotion, perish, and endure."

Answer for the Inaugural Address: The words FDR used were very encouraging and serious. The words he used told people that he will help us get through the great depression. He is also encouraging America to persevere through any problems that will face the nation and FDR. For example, the words are " candor, impel, preeminently.

7. How did the media impact the messages that these two Presidents were trying to make?

The media changed Abraham Lincoln's speech by him needing to make the speech affect it's audience in a way that they feel and think differently/ change the way they think. Another factor is the media changed the speech by him making the speech in a certain way that the audience would be pleased.
Now we are engaged in great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure ."

The media changed FDR's speech by making him make the speech please the audience and making them think that we as a country is ready for anything. Also he is convincing that he as president can help us as a nation.

Rodrigo, Zaid, Blake, Justin

1) Carefully analyze each paragraph of each speech. What are some of the similarities between the two speeches?

Answer) Both speeches were to motivate the country during difficult times. Both speeches motivated the country , and were very helpful. Roosevelt's speech was more bold, while Lincoln's speech was more subtle.

2) Look at the vocabulary in both speeches. Are some of the important motivating words seen in both speeches?
Endure was in both speeches, which is a word similar to survive, and continue, which makes it a motivating word.

Answer- The text provides motivating words such as "Dedicate, Consecrate, Impel, Hallow and Advance." These words provided meaning and the full effect of what was going on around them. Lincoln spoke meaningfully and dramatic that he got the full effect on the people by saying those words. Franklin D. Roosevelt also said a very motivational quote which was"The only thing you have to fear is fear itself". He described fear as nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror.

7) How did the media impact the messages that these two Presidents were trying to make?

Answer- The background that they had (Great Depression and the Civil War) made everyone help out in anyway possible. The people had to come together and help one another. It wasn't as efficient, but they got through some of the darkest times in America.

8) How did both of these Presidents develop their points of view within each of these speeches? Did they try to connect the the people of America? How did they do this?

Answer- They included their overall opinion on all of the things that are happening so, President Abraham Lincoln talked about the Civil War and President FDR talked about the Great Depression & how we should not fear. They connected to the people of America by talking about the good and bad events that are going on and by talking about how we should stay strong and keep fighting. In President Lincoln's speech he talked about the two sides of the Civil War, The Union Soldiers which were from North USA, and the Confederate Soldiers which were from Southern USA. He wanted both sides to be neutral and together so that there would be no more slavery. President FDR was the president during the time of the Great Depression. He tried his best to fix everything after The Stock Market Crash occurred. Residents and other people were getting low on money, so now it became harder for them to get the resources they needed to survive, they could barely get food and it became very hard to live.
