Intervention Design

Our intervention designs can be subdivided into two domains: financial and behavioral.
The financial domain focuses on developing the public transportation prepaid plan such that it takes advantage of mental accounting concepts to nudge individuals towards using more public transportation. The plan is designed to integrate costs in order to decrease sensitivity to them, set monthly prepaid investment benchmarks to take advantage of sunk cost and break even effects and allow individuals to increase transaction utility by using more public transportation.
The behavioral domain is focused on using inights from framing, anchoring, availability bias and the endowment effect to emphasize the environmental and financial gains from taking public transportation, as well as to nudge individuals to seek those gains and help preserve the environment. The plan is to reach the public through internal digital signs on the bus, and special features in the public transportation app.

Measurement of Impact

MDM Consultants will measure the impact of the proposed interventions by fundamentally assessing the rate of change in public transportation use. We will evaluate public transportation usage by assessing entries ‘card taps’ on a monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual basis. We will examine the change in usage for three months, followed by the three remaining quarters in the first year. By starting with this shorter timeline for ride usage change detection, we can assess the immediacy of our intervention. By progressing to our quarterly analysis we can gauge how exogenous factors might impact usage rate for variables such as seasonality (i.e., perhaps people are less likely to travel during the winter months compared to the spring). In year two we will measure public transit usage bi-annualy to see the longer-term effects of the proposed intervention and identify trends that might explain why the results vary accordingly. This two-year pilot study will provide insights to inform future sustainable nudging towards public transit by collecting both quantitative and qualitative data in response to our policy and economic proposals.

Cars have been central to the American lifestyle since the early 1900s in cities and suburbs alike. Yet, with a growing urban population, driving has caused many adverse consequences, including harming the environment, health problems, and it is very costly to drive and maintain a car. MDM consulting believes that a two-pronged approach, including both behavioral and policy interventions, can incentivize more frequent public transportation use.

Problem Proposal

As the American population continues to grow and cities become denser, driving has become inefficient and created many problems including hurting the environment, creating physical and mental health implications, and it is a costly alternative. Chicago has one of the highest greenhouse gas emissions, which are worsened by constant driving, and cause the environment to suffer by increasing pollution and rising temperatures. Driving also creates disastrous health consequences, including muscle tension. Heightened traffic times are also mentally exhausting, causing fatigue, irritability, and distracted driving. All the while, driving is more financially costly. Thus, it is a crucial time to intervene to highlight the ease, sustainability, and lower cost of public transport, and shift behavior towards a more sustainable future. MDM Consulting strongly believes that nudging will be an effective method to impact local communities, provide health benefits, ameliorate congestion, and reduce pollution in our city.

Exploration of Concepts

To incentivize the utilization of public transit in lieu of privatized transit, MDM Consulting decided to explore a two-pronged approach. MDM Consulting will analyze psychological and behavioral biases alongside policy implementation to create a holistic method. By examining both behavior techniques and policy implementation, individuals will be subject to direct policy incentives and indirect, behavioral signals. Important behavioral and psychological systems we consider include the status quo bias, sunk costs, loss aversion, mental accounting, and the availability bias. The decision making process towards public transportation can seem cognitively taxing and time consuming, so many continue to follow social norms and the status quo, regardless of the immense opportunity cost. Nevertheless, this is why MDM consulting believes that a multimodal approach can nudge behavior in favor of public transportation. Through this method, MDM consulting must continue to depict public transportation as a safe, easy, clean and sustainable alternative.
