The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the last battles fought between the Japanese and the Americans in the Pacific. It was also one of the bloodiest battles for both sides. The reason for this is due to the island's close proximity to the Japanese home islands, and the fact that the Japanese considered it to be part of their nation. The horrific casualties experienced by the Americans helped reinforced the sense of how terrible and costly an invasion of the actual Japanese islands would be.

Battle of Manchuria

Dutch East Indies Campaign took place in January - March 1942, Japan won and they gained access to oil and rubber.

This is what brought the United States into the war with Japan, they declared in on December 8th, 1941.
