On the other hand, in the novel Johnny is the smallest of the gang and because of that “Johnny was the gang's pet” (Hinton 25). Hinton uses idioms figuratively and connects the idioms smoothly in the novel. Her idioms are more serious and not to be funny. These idioms are to make something funny. This supports it because in the video it was the skeleton actually fishing.
Idioms Comparison
Idioms are words and phrases that have both figurative and literal meanings. In the Idioms video the skeleton addressed the elephant with confessions like, “ I stabbed a guy in the back” (Amanda Koh and Mollie Helms). The Figurative meaning of the idiom means to betray someone, and deceive them. The literal meaning of the idiom is that someone actually murdered and stabbed someone in the back. However in “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton, Hinton used an idiom to describe how Johnny is treated, and how his personality is used to earn his comical title in the gang. In the book Ponyboy describes Johnny by saying, “Dally had turned around and belted him so hard it knocked a tooth loose. A complete stranger, too. But Johnny was the gang’s pet, and Dally just couldn't hit him” (S.E Hinton 24-25). The figurative meaning of the quote was that Johnny was loyal and did whatever the gang wanted him to like a pet is humble, and loyal to it’s master. The literal meaning of the phrase was that Johnny was actually the gang’s pet, meaning that he was the type of pet that had a collar, and a bowl of food, and water. The Idioms used in the video were more original, and funny, as suppose to the idioms in the novel which were more serious, and meant to be used in a more sophisticated manner. To conclude, both S.E Hinton, Amanda Koh and Mollie Helms use idioms in their work.

Cindy Chen Period 7Ms. Gianakis 7 November 2016 Idioms CER Although both the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and “Confessions of an Idiom Animated Comedy” by Amanda Koh and Mollie Helms use literal and figurative idioms to express something their tones, are different. The producers of “Confessions of an Idiom Animated Comedy” similes to make people laugh, and S.E. Hilton uses idioms to show how serious something is. For example when the elephant was trying to get the skeleton to reveal his “secret information”, he figuratively uses the idiom “spill the beans”, and actually tips over a can of beans. The literal meaning of this would be to actually spill a can of beans. The figurative meaning is, to get someone to tell the truth. However in The Outsiders, Ponyboy describes Johnny as someone who couldn't say boo to a goose” (Hinton 24). The literal meaning of this is that Johnny is scared of a goose, the figurative meaning is that Johnny is very timid. This description that Johnny is a very timid/shy boy, his personality is probably caused by his parents abuse, and the mental trauma caused by the Socs. S.E. Hinton uses this idiom to show what Johnny’s personality is like after mistreatment and the raid. From the Socs. All in all, the novel The Outsiders and “Confessions of an Idiom Animated Comedy” use figurative and literal idioms.

In the video, the Skeleton confesses to the Elephant, “I stabbed a man in the back” (Koh and Helms). Koh and Helms visually represent the idiom to depict the Skeleton’s admission in a literal and humorous way. However, in The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton incorporates idioms in a figurative way to show a serious tone. Ponyboy wishes that his brothers would come to the movies with him, but films, “bore Darry to death” (Hinton 3). By using this figurative idiom, Hinton demonstrates that Darry finds this type of entertainment boring. To conclude, S.E.

Miss. Gianakis
Period 7
7 November 2016
Idioms CER paragraph
Idioms both have literal and figurative meanings. In the idioms video we watched, the skeleton warned the elephant that "I got my eye on you" (Amanda Koh and Mollie Helms). The literal meaning of this idiom is that the skeleton's eye is on the elephant, but the figurative meaning is to be watching closely and with caution. On the other hand, "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, Hinton used an idiom to describe Sodapop and his education, "I mean my second-oldest brother, Soda, who is sixteen-going-on-seventeen, never cracks a book at all..." (Hinton 2). The figurative meaning of this idiom is that Soda isn't really into books or maybe he isn't that smart at all. On the other hand, the literal meaning of this example is to take and hammer and literally take a hammer and smash a book causing it to crack. The idioms used in the video were more humorous and was meant for teaching purposes, unlike the examples of idioms from the book which were more complex and used to create an image for the novel. All in all, S.E. Hinton, Amanda Koh, and Mollie Helms all use idioms in there work to show humorous and sophisticated examples.

Miss.Gianakis

Period 7

7 November 2016

	                           Idiom CER

In the book “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton, and in the video Confessions of Idioms by Amanda Koh and Molly Helms, they both use idioms differently. Both the writers use idioms to explain their points and not tell the readers what they are saying. Hinton uses idioms to give the reader an idea of what the time period is in the book. Once, Ponyboy was saying how Johnny got beaten up and, “Johnny was scared of his own shadow” (Hinton 4). Amanda Koh and Molly Helms use idioms differently. In contrast, the video Confessions of Idioms uses idioms to make it more fun. The skeleton didn’t want to admit the crimes he did so he said, “I got my eye on you” (Koh and Helms). Each author uses idioms in a different way. For instance, the novel uses older idioms, and the video uses more 20th century ones. All in all, the novel and video use unalike ways of showing idioms.

Idiom: “Johnny was scared of his own shadow.” (Hinton 4)

Literal Meaning: He was actually scared of his shadow

Figurative Meaning: He is scared of almost everything.
