How do settings portray character? What kinds do we see Mitch in as opposed to Morrie and how do they portray their characters?

A: Settings such as quiet places show that the character is shy or places that are lively such as parties show that the character is outgoing and social. Mitch is in a constantly frantic and changing environment, showing that he's a workaholic and busy person. Morrie, on the other hand, can often be seen at social outings or contemplating at home, showing his love of being around others yet still being able to question his and others' position in life. - Danny Lin.

Q: How is our attention drawn to particular images? How are particular visual elements used as symbols or metaphors?

A: Our attention seems to be drawn to abnormalities or things we don't have. When we see that people have things we don't, good or bad, we just seem to notice them. One metaphor from the movie is "Morrie was sitting on the tracks with death's locomotive charging towards him." This shows that Morrie's death was approaching quickly. Morrie knew it was coming; he just didn't know exactly when.

He goes from being very casual to wearing baggy old clothes that basically tell us that he is very relaxed and really has nothing to do. What Mitch wears is very dressy clothing. Shirt and tie type of outfits. It shows us that he is very strict and serious about himself and how he looks. He also shows us a type of light side when he wears sweaters when going to visit Morrie.

- At the beginning of the movie, it shows the scene of Morrie dancing and having a good time. Then the scene breaks from the loud, joyful music and cuts to the next scene where it starts showing his signs of ALS while trying to get into his car but not quite making it and falling to the ground. This builds drama in the movie because in the first scene where he's in top shape and dancing. Then when it cuts to the scene of him falling while trying to get into the car, it kind of starts to show the disease take over and mess up his legs.

Q- How do the settings in the movie portray the mood?

A- The settings in the movie portray mood by giving more feeling and understanding of the movie. The main mood of the book is serious, but at times it can be portrayed as comfortable from the feeling of Morrie speaking to openly and his talks with Mitch. For example, the time shown of Mitch's workplace shows how chaotic his life was at the time, and how much stress he had. When we first see Morrie's house, it is bright and people are smiling, this shows Morrie's good attitude. and the happy or cheerful mood when people are around Morrie.

A: The film version of TwM was true to the book in most aspects. Most of the things that the actors said corresponded to the book. Some of the situations in the movie didn't match up with the book. For example, in the book Mitch and Janine were married, but in the movie they were only dating. Also, in the book Mitch explains that he bought many cars and a house on the hill, yet the movie doesn't show that. Another situation from the book that was changed in the movie was the part in the book where Mitch helps Morrie move from Morrie's wheelchair to the recliner; that event was not shown in the movie.

In the movie, Mitch is very involved in his work, basically consumed in it, which he is like that in the book as well, yet he seems to enjoy it, while in the book, his job frustrates him. Mitch is workaholic who always seems to be conflicted, but in the movie, he simply seems just awkward and mellow.

What does the clothing that the major characters wear say about their personalities? Morrie is close to death and doesn't have strength to do things by himself, so he wears loose clothing so he can be comfortable all day.
