Mao introduced collective farms. Essentially, they were government owned farms where farmers gave a certain quantity of crops to the government. In return, they got to keep some of it. However, the peasants all had to contribute to maintain the farm, and they often did not receive enough food.

Chairman Mao's effort to modernize China, otherwise known as the Great Leap Forward, was just that. He made it so that workers had to live and work in communes of about 20,000 people. They all were assigned jobs and places to eat and sleep.

The Cultural Revolution was an attempt made by Mao to calm the chaos caused by the Great Leap Forward and restore the power to the government, more specifically Mao. It encouraged the humiliation, torture and even death of "Capitalist Rooters" who Mao perceived as a threat to Communism in China. This in turn created the Red Guards, a group who traveled across China and punished those who did not fully support Mao. Chaos erupted. Schools closed, factions battled for control, and most importantly, people abandoned Mao.
