He was born in 1918, in the village of Mvezo, where he belonged to the royal family of the Thembu people, whose language is Xhosa. During primary school, he received the name “Nelson” from a teacher, which was a common custom at that time.

In his youth, he practiced boxing and long–distance running, but his life was mostly marked by political activism. For fighting racial segregation, he was arrested in 1962 and remained imprisoned for 27 years.
Diogenes of Sinope: The Philosopher Who Chose Simplicity by Carlos Adauto and Igor De Carvalho - 1°B - colegial

Diogenes of Sinope was a Greek philosopher who lived in the 4th century BC. He became famous as one of the founders of Cynicism, a philosophy which taught that people should live simply and follow nature instead of chasing wealth. Diogenes, whose father was a banker, gave up money and comfort to prove that happiness does not depend on possessions.

He moved to Athens, where he lived in a large clay jar instead of a normal house. He was a man who enjoyed shocking people with his unusual choices. One day, he walked around with a lantern in the daylight, saying he was looking for an honest man, an act which made people reflect on the corruption of society.

Diogenes was also known for his sharp humor. When Alexander the Great, who admired him, asked if he wanted anything, Diogenes simply answered, “Stand out of my sunlight.” This reply, which showed his fearless independence, became legendary.

A curiosity about him is that he once owned a wooden cup, which he threw away after seeing a child drink water with his hands. For Diogenes, even the smallest object was unnecessary. He is remembered as a philosopher who proved that freedom, honesty, and truth are worth more than power or riches.

He is the son of Percy Geraldo Bolsonaro and Olinda Bonturi Bolsonaro, and he grew up in a modest household in Eldorado, in the Ribeira Valley region. His upbringing was marked by a rural environment, which shaped his early life experiences.

In the late 1970s, Bolsonaro pursued a military career, enrolling at the Agulhas Negras Military Academy, one of Brazil’s most prestigious institutions for officer training. After graduation, he served as an army officer in the field artillery and paratrooper units. During his time in the military, he developed a reputation for being outspoken and direct, often expressing dissatisfaction with low military salaries. His boldness became evident in 1986 when he published an article criticizing the government for its treatment of the armed forces, which earned him both notoriety and disciplinary consequences. Despite this, his actions resonated with many within the military ranks.

In 1988, Bolsonaro transitioned from a military career to politics. That same year, he was elected as a city councilor of Rio de Janeiro, beginning his long journey in public office. Two years later, in 1990, he was elected as a federal deputy, representing the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies. He held this position for nearly three decades, being reelected multiple times. Throughout his tenure, Bolsonaro became known for his staunchly conservative positions, his defense of military values, his harsh criticism of left-wing policies, and his often polemical remarks.

His time in Congress was marked by strong advocacy for law and order, family values, and pro-military policies. He frequently criticized corruption, leftist ideologies, and progressive social agendas. While his legislative record was not extensive in terms of bills passed, his ability to attract attention through speeches, interviews, and controversial statements built him a loyal base of supporters. Over time, he became a prominent voice among conservatives who were dissatisfied with Brazil’s political establishment.

Bolsonaro’s national prominence grew significantly in the mid-2010s, during a period of economic crisis, corruption scandals involving the Workers’ Party (PT), and widespread disillusionment with traditional politicians. He positioned himself as an outsider candidate, despite his long career in Congress, portraying himself as a man of the people, unafraid to confront political correctness or the entrenched elites. His discourse emphasized patriotism, religious values, and a hardline approach to crime.

In 2018, Bolsonaro launched his presidential campaign. Despite limited support from major parties at first, he gained massive traction through social media, where his direct communication style resonated with millions of Brazilians. His campaign was boosted by his image as an anti-corruption candidate and by his criticisms of socialism and communism. During the campaign, in September 2018, Bolsonaro was the victim of a knife attack at a rally in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. He was seriously injured and required multiple surgeries. This incident generated national sympathy and further solidified his image as a fighter.

In October 2018, Bolsonaro won the presidential election, defeating Fernando Haddad of the Workers’ Party. He took office on January 1, 2019, as the 38th President of Brazil. His presidency was characterized by a strong emphasis on conservative social values, economic liberalization policies led by his finance minister Paulo Guedes, and efforts to reduce the size of the state. Internationally, Bolsonaro aligned Brazil more closely with the United States during Donald Trump’s presidency and adopted a skeptical stance toward multilateral organizations and climate agreements.

Bolsonaro’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic drew significant controversy. He frequently downplayed the severity of the virus, opposed lockdowns, and criticized vaccines, which polarized public opinion both domestically and internationally. Supporters praised his defense of individual freedoms and economic activity, while critics accused him of negligence and mismanagement.

Environmental policies during his government, particularly concerning the Amazon rainforest, also generated global debates. Bolsonaro argued that Brazil had the sovereign right to develop the Amazon region and often clashed with international leaders who criticized deforestation rates under his administration.

Despite controversies, Bolsonaro maintained a strong base of support among conservatives, evangelical Christians, the military, and agribusiness sectors. His speeches often emphasized nationalism, traditional family values, religious freedom, and a rejection of socialism.

In 2022, Bolsonaro sought reelection but was defeated by former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a highly polarized and contentious election.

Leonardo da Vinci, whose gifts included art, science and engineering, has been the subject of numerous biographies that speculate on his life and legacy. Among the most famous is Walter Isaacson’s “Leonardo da Vinci,” a big read that seems to cover everything miraculous about him at length. This biography, featuring extensive research and entries from his famous notebooks, offers insight into the brilliant mind responsible for masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Other significant works include “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci,” edited by Jean Paul Richter, which includes transcriptions of Leonardo’s original writings and sketches. Those notebooks, which reflect an enormous range of curiosity and inventiveness provide unforgettable glimpses into the cerebral activity of a true Renaissance man.

In "Leonardo da Vinci: The Flights of the Mind," Charles Nicholl looks at the life of Leonardo, a figure whose inquisitive nature allowed him to discover things hundreds of years ahead of his time. The book explores Leonardo’s ceaseless quest for knowledge, examining both his accomplishments as an artist and scientist. Another major biography is “Leonardo da Vinci: A Life” by Brian S. Koppleman, which examines the relationship of Leonardo’s art and science. This book provides a full picture of his career and demonstrates how his varied interests were frequently connected in ways that were, for his time, groundbreaking.

Finally, “Leonardo: The Artist and the Man,” by Serge Bramly delivers a psychological and artistic exploration of Leonardo; his character informed his work in so many ways.

His positive impact was mainly seen in the peaceful fight against racial segregation and in the defense of equality between Black and white people.

One of his greatest legacies was the promotion of nonviolence as a form of protest. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, King showed that it was possible to confront social injustices through peaceful marches, speeches, and acts of civil resistance, without resorting to violence. This approach strengthened the credibility of the movement and gained international support.

Thanks to his leadership, important laws were passed, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited racial segregation in public places, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which ensured greater political participation for African Americans.

In addition, King conveyed a message of hope, unity, and justice. His famous speech “I Have a Dream” remains a symbol of inspiration for social movements around the world, encouraging the pursuit of equality, respect, and human dignity.

The positive impact of Martin Luther King Jr. goes beyond the borders of the United States, serving to this day as an example of courage, ethical leadership, and the transformative power of peaceful struggle.

Kendrick Lamar, whose full name is Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, is an American rapper who was born in Compton. He is 38 years old. His first album, whose name is Section.80, was released in 2011. In this album, which already showed his impressive lyricism, Kendrick presented first-person representations of the place where he lived and deep social critiques.

As a result of his talent, Kendrick Lamar has won 22 Grammy Awards. He has already managed to bring rival gangs together during a show, which became a moment of peace and unity. "Kendrick Lamar achieved the feat of bringing the main gangs and gang leaders of Los Angeles onto the same stage, which was an event where they all came together to honor hip-hop. Members of different gangs, who usually were rivals, were dancing and singing together in peace," says an article from Jornal do Rap.

Moreover, Kendrick Lamar also won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018. He became the first pop artist, that is, outside of classical and jazz music, to achieve this feat. Rolling Stone ranked his album To Pimp a Butterfly, which was praised for its innovative sound and social commentary, third among the best albums of the decade. A song from the same album, Alright, which was named the best song of the 2010s by Pitchfork in 2019, became an anthem for a generation. Kendrick Lamar, alongside notable artists who include Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and 50 Cent, performed Alright at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show, which took place on February 13, 2022.

His most successful album, DAMN., released in 2017, also features his biggest hit, HUMBLE., along with several other more commercial hits, such as DNA. In his 2022 album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick reflects on his mental state over the past decade, admitting that all his success had been building ego and pride within him. This album is like a therapy session, showing his personal side, as in the tracks Count Me Out and Father Time. It is certainly his most personal album.

In 2024, Kendrick was involved in one of the biggest rap feuds in history with Drake, in which K.Dot delivered his “checkmate” with the song Not Like Us, which earned him 5 Grammys.

From a very young age, he faced significant challenges, as he was born with a growth hormone deficiency, which required regular medical treatments and injections. Despite these obstacles, he never stopped dreaming big and dedicating himself entirely to football, which became his true passion.

He joined Barcelona, where he spent most of his career, and quickly stood out for his unique skills. His dribbling, which leaves defenders behind, his vision, which creates opportunities that others cannot see, and his precise finishing, which made him a top scorer season after season, made him exceptional. With Argentina, Messi won the Copa América in 2021 and the Finalissima, but his crowning achievement came in 2022 when he led Argentina to victory in the FIFA World Cup.

Pelé, who was born Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940, in Três Corações, Brazil, grew up in a small town where life was simple but full of dreams. He was a boy whose love for football was so intense that he would play for hours on the streets with makeshift balls, ignoring the poverty that surrounded his family. His father, Dondinho, was a footballer who taught him discipline and technique, while his mother, Celeste, was a woman who provided him with warmth, care, and encouragement in moments when doubt could have stopped him.

Even as a child, Pelé faced challenges that would have discouraged many. He was small and fragile compared to other boys, but he had a spirit which never gave up. Every goal he scored, every trick he perfected, reflected not only talent but also a passion that came from his heart. He once said that football was a language through which he could express joy, sadness, and hope.

At 15, Pelé joined Santos FC, a club where his incredible skill quickly attracted attention. By 16, he was playing professionally, and at 17, he became the youngest player to score in a World Cup final, leading Brazil to victory in 1958. This was the first of three World Cups that he would win, a record which made him unique in football history. His ability to perform under pressure, even as a teenager, showed the courage and determination that defined his life.

Pelé was not just an athlete. He was a man who felt deeply, laughed loudly, and cared for others. He was known for his humility which inspired millions, and he often spoke about the responsibility that came with fame. Throughout his career, he became an ambassador for peace and education, using his voice to support children who lived in poverty and communities that needed hope.

His time at Santos FC, a club where he became a global superstar, and later at the New York Cosmos, a team that helped popularize football in the United States, showed that his influence extended far beyond Brazil. Pelé was a man whose impact transcended the sport; he united nations, generations, and cultures through the universal language of football, proving that the game can bring joy, connection, and understanding to people who had never met.

Pelé, whose life was full of triumphs and challenges, taught the world that greatness is not only measured by records or goals but also by character, resilience, and empathy. Even in moments of injury, doubt, or fatigue, he remained a symbol of hope which inspired countless people to dream bigger and work harder. His legacy, a combination of skill, humanity, and heart, continues to live on in every child who plays football with joy and every fan who finds in him a reason to believe in possibility.

Pelé passed away on December 29, 2022, leaving a world that is forever richer because of his presence. He remains an eternal example of how one person, who dares to dream and cares for others, can change the world.
