If the poems are similar, then you discuss the similar themes/ concepts, e.g. bravery, heroism. This is a great question. It's a different kind of knowledge and skill you need to write an essay in an hour. Think about what you're being asked to do; we're not asking for the same level of proofing and editing as an essay that you have weeks to prepare. An essay that you have time to get ready will be asking for research and high levels of connection between your arguments. An exam essay is asking you to 'strut your stuff' in a coherent way. Everything you say in the exam question MUST relate to the question. Don't go off on tangents. It is ALL about knowing your techniques and how they usually affect an audience, knowing your chosen poem really well and then talking about how they contribute to answering the essay question.

If the author of the unseen poem is unknown, will there be information about his background in order to help us understand his perspective etc.

I clarified this question with Mr Stuart. You will not receive biographical information about the poet. However, from your study of the historical context of WW1, you will be able to decipher the perspective of the poet. It is better for you to use your knowledge of the historical context of WW1 to write your poetry essay. You do not need to include detailed information about the poet's biography. However, you may mention some pertinent information about authorial context, such as how Owen's experience as a solider informed his condemnation of the hardship experienced by soldiers in WW1.

Try to work out the meaning of the word from the surrounding words/phrases, and other contextual information in the poem.

For History essays you should use sources and historical facts to support your topic sentence. What is a good strategy for answering short questions? For English, the TEA method works well - Technique, evidence, analysis. E.g. Owen's use of emasculating similes to describe soldiers, such as "bend double like beggars", conveys the negative impact of war and rejects the notion of war as heroic.

For short answer questions in History you should use sources and examples to support your points. Use the PEA method - Point, evidence, analyse.
