We are conducting a study on the factors which influence widening access medical students' perceptions about access and entry to surgical training. As a widening access student myself, I am interested in pursuing a surgical career, however, there is some evidence to suggest that these students face barriers to accessing a career in surgery. 

We are writing to invite you to participate in an interview about your experiences which influenced your career choice and progression, we do not require you to have come from a widening participation background. However, in the purpose of interest, widening participation criteria for the university can be found at: https://www.leeds.ac.uk/undergraduate-applying/doc/alternative-admissions. This can help us understand what influences accessibility to surgical careers. This interview should take no longer than an hour and will take place via Microsoft Teams at a time convenient to you. Participation is entirely voluntary, and will not affect your progression in surgical training.

For my intercalation degree in medical education, I am conducting a research project exploring Foundation Trainees’ experiences related to working with death and dying during the COVID-19 pandemic. I am particularly interested to gain an insight into any support you received to work with dying patients during the pandemic and what you have learnt from these experiences.
