During the Middle Ages of Europe, feudalism emerged. Feudalism is a political system based on land ownership and personal loyalty. This was mainly from a lord to someone from a lower class, such as a vassal, knight, or a serf. While the lords gave them fiefs (land), the vassals and knights gave their lord loyalty and then military services. Lastly, the peasant-in exchange for farmland, housing, and protection- did labor for the lords on the manor and paid taxes in grains to the church.

It said that illness was the punishment given by god to those who were sinners. Since many people were Christian, they went along with that explanation and didn't question anything. The only type of medicine they used were based on herbs and potions. Some other superstitions include: Friday the Thirteenth; black cats symbolizing demons; and throwing salt over your left shoulder which was considered to get rid of demons around you
