Social Justice Leadership promotes equity for all despite race, sex, gender, disability and social economic status. Social Justice leadership ensures that everyone can benefit from societal practices and norms. Each citizen will have the opportunity and access needed to succeed by way of social justice leadership. Social justice leadership “counteract biased and marginalized forces that reproduce social and political inequality” (Cooper, 2009, p.174)and finds solutions to the societal issues that that produce inequitable lifestyles.

“At the launch of the initiative, President Barack Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum creating the first-ever Task Force on Childhood Obesity to conduct a review of every single program and policy relating to child nutrition and physical activity and develop a national action plan to maximize federal resources and set concrete benchmarks toward the First Lady’s national goal. The Task Force recommendations focus on the five pillars of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative:

Creating a healthy start for children

Empowering parents and caregivers

Providing healthy food in schools

Improving access to healthy, affordable foods

Increasing physical activity

Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents and caregivers, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Your involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children” (Learn the facts).

Her campaign consisted of a “networked social justice community that had specific, time delineated equity goals that they worked to accomplish” (Scalan & Theoharis, 2015, p.9).

Social Justice Leaders must be for the people and their people. They must be ready to go against dominant authority and power structures for the common good. Social Justice leaders are transformative leaders “who are willing to take risks, form strategic alliances, to learn and unlearn their power, and reach beyond a “fear of authority” toward a concrete vision of the work in which oppression, violence, and brutality are transformed by a commitment to equality, liberty and democratic struggle” (Shields, 2010, p. 570). They are concerned with bettering their community and neighborhood by any means necessary. They want the next generation to be 10x better than them have the knowledge to do so.

Social Justice leaders are unafraid of the consequences and are concerned with being successful leaders by “balancing critique and promise; effecting deep and equitable change; creating new knowledge frameworks; acknowledging power and privilege; emphasizing both private and public good; focusing on liberation, democracy, equity, and justice; and demonstrating moral courage and activism” (Shields, 2010, p.573).

On March 31st, 2019, a neighborhood hero in his own right was gunned down in front of his business he owned in the Crenshaw district called The Marathon Store. Nipsey Hussle was more than a rapper, he was an entrepreneur who wanted to give back to his community with the money he made with his career. He opened up businesses in the city he grew up in ad employed its residents. He invested in a company that was teaching inner city kids from South Central LA about coding and Stem. He was trying to show his people a new way of life and helping this economically and educationally fight injustice and inequality. He recently bought more property to build low-income housing for the area’s residents. He preached about supporting black business and investing in yourself despite where you come from. He truly cared for his people. The city of LA, my home, is mourning his murder like no other. He was our generation’s Tupac. #TheMarathonContinues

"You do not learn to engage in social justice leadership practices as an isolated individual, but rather within communities of practice" (Scalan & Theoharis, 2015, p.5).

Managing and Nurturing learning communities is impossible without the three dimensions:

1. What are we learning to pursue? " ("joint enterprise" articulates the key purpose of learning that unites members)

2. Who is engaged in this learning? ( "mutual agreement" describes the parameters of membership, regardless of positioning and direction, all are engaged with one another in the shared learning pursuit)

3. How are we pursuing this?("shared repertoire" identifies the tools, artifacts, stories and other means through which we learn the pursuit)

(Scalan & Theoharis, 2015, p.25).

Dimension #1 helps to centralize the learning community on one sound goal.

Dimension #2 is the most important in managing and nurturing a learning community because as a social justice leader, you can assess the needs of all parties involved and help them realize their importance in the community of practice. This is the key to collaboration and "a collaborative approach to engaging families that seek to build community, bridge cultural differences between families and schools, foster dialogue, and share power is rare" (Cooper, 2009, p.173)

Dimension #3 ensures that everyone is learning and elevating towards reaching the goal. This is key for nurturing the inquiry and reflective thinking because this is the stage where the community puts their words into action.

"The vibe of Vector 90 is definitely that of “win” by any means necessary and genuineness from those around you. While in that space you will meet people that are more than willing to provide you with perspective, motivation and insight" (Sampay, 2018).

The founding of Vector 90 is a perfect example of managing and nurturing learning communities. Nipsey Hussle and his business partner came together to bring stem, entrepreneurship and networking opportunities ("joint enterprise") to the inner city youth ("mutual agreement") and built them a space where they can host events like the "monthly Burn Out session which is an event from 7:00 p.m until 6:00 a.m, envisioned for people to focus on projects and work until they are literally burnt out. It is a space for creatives, entrepreneurs and students to network and zone out" (Sampay, 2018). ("shared repertoire")

Vector 90 is the perfect example of two social justice leaders coming together for the greater good of a community in need of certain resources.
