The mouth is an opening in the head where digestion begins. It breaks down food into smaller pieces. When you put food into your mouth, you begin to salivate. Then you start to chew with your teeth. Your tongue starts moving the food around in your mouth until it is small enough to swallow. Your tongue starts to move the bolus toward the back of your throat, and then you swallow.
