Classes will be given one 15-20 minute period per week to come in to the library and borrow books. All returned books from the previous week should be sent down to the library for processing at 8:45 am. I will check in all books during the fifteen minute flex time at the beginning of the day, and then students come with the teacher to select and check out new books during their assigned library block. This is not a prep block; teachers are expected to remain with the class during the library exchange to support student selection.

You are welcome to browse and select books, but please do not leave the library with books that have not been signed out. There is a clipboard located on the bookcase ledge behind the circulation desk; if I am not available in the library, it can be used to manually record borrowed books. Novel study kits are located in the middle cupboard behind the laminating machine in the staff room. Please see me for any assistance. I am happy to try to borrow books from other schools, as well, if we don’t have them in our collection.

The DRC (District Resource Centre) also has a wide selection of resources available. Each child in the school receives a 1-30 sheet at the beginning of the school year. Sheet is self-explanatory. When a child completes a sheet, he or she comes to the library to see me and to receive the following sheet as well as a Winit sticker. Each student will receive a certificate for the year on which to place these stickers. Certificates can be displayed in the classroom, or kept in a file with the teacher. I cannot stress the security of our iPad carts strongly enough. The padlock comb is not to be revealed to students under any circumstances. The combination had to be changed three times last year as students were continually accessing/learning the new combination. Use your body to block the padlock from view while unlocking, and scramble the tumblers immediately after opening. The padlock should be oriented with open shackle to the right when relocking – otherwise the numbers are upside down for unlocking when the next person tries to unlock.

Student iPad Oath:
Students will be asked to sign an iPad oath this year in order to try and prevent some of the ongoing issues with usage.

Tracking sheets:
I have developed a single tracking sheet for all carts. Please fill out the sheet for your class and keep the tracking sheet easily available for TOCs. This way, students in each class are assigned one numbered iPad, and will use the same iPad number no matter which cart is being used. This will help us narrow down the number of students using a particular iPad if there are issues with the iPad.

Sign Out sheets:
You can sign out an iPad cart using the sign out sheets located outside the computer room door.

Care and Storage:
I suggest teachers unplug all the iPads on the cart before allowing students to use. We had multiple iPads cables broken last year, likely from students yanking on the cable to unplug. It would also be good to have teachers plug the iPads back in, however, if you train students to be careful, it might not be critical. Students are not permitted to deliver iPad carts to the classrooms; this is teacher responsibility.
