Growing up, I have had my fair share of experiences in the wild. I've been taught how to fish, camp, start fires, shoot guns, and make the best of out nature. My biological father and step dad taught me these things and it stuck with me I have always enjoyed nature and prefer it over the city life. I have been to a handful of camping sites (I do not remember the names, sorry) and I always enjoyed the stay there. My favorite part about being in the wild are definitely the animals and the landscapes and trees I can climb. I love climbing out in the nature, it makes me feel so free and full of ambition.

In the future, I hope to travel out more and hopefully see new animals for myself and climb more trees, rocks, or mountains. I want to try other activities out in the wild as well such as cave exploring, waterfall jumping, and chopping down a tree. The number one thing I would love to try the most though is animal hunting, FOR FOOD THOUGH, not trophy hunting because that is very cruel and evil.

Summary: Based on a true story Into the Wild follows the story and aftermath of the journey of Christopher Johnson McCandless. Christopher had changed his name to Alex and was picked up by a man named Jim Gallien who offered (p. 6) a ride to him. They conversated during the ride to Alex's destination and Jim had offered him many things such as his shoes, sandwich, and clothes. Jim tries to dissuade (p. 5) Alex. Alex however refuses these as he is no normal (p.7) person and it seems as if he lives off the thrill of a challenge. After Alex is dropped at his destination (Stampede Trail). Alex was determined (p. 6) to make this travel no matter what and he was positive (p.6) about his choices. Alex is dropped off and his fateful journey begins

Analysis: I think Alex is pretty stupid for trying to power through this journey alone and thinking he handle it. Mother nature isn't something to mess with and it can get real mean out there. He should have had a traveling partner or have been more prepares or if he had just listened to Jim, he would have maybe been alive today.

#BeSmarter #MakeBetterChoices #JimGallienWasSmart

Summary: Sometime has passed and some contumacious (p. 11) Alaskan hikers were passing by and stumbled upon a quite eerie incident (p. 11). Inside an old rusty van they see a dead (p. 13) body. This was the body of Chris Candless a.k.a. Alex who had died from what authorities believe is starvation (p. 14). Before the body they saw an SOS (p. 14) note so that's why the hikers went looking for something. At the scene, self portraits photos, journals, and his gun.

Analysis: While I do feel bad for Chris and what he had to go through, it was his fault and he kind of asked for it. Jim had warned him and he still chose to go through with his hike and he suffered because of his hubris. It makes curious how the people must have felt when they saw his dead body, it must have gave them quite a spook.

#RIPChris #ShouldHaveMadeBetterChoices #CreepySelfies #SOSSavesLives

Summary: Chris had travelled and was basically departing from his family because he felt strange (p. 17) with his family. His family always offered and tried to admonish (p. 21) Chris all the time. Chris was an odd (p. 16) individual though and didn't take anything from them as he thought it would make his family think they bought his respect (p. 21). Eventually he left and took a journey to which he didn't know would be the end of his destiny (p. 23).

Analysis: I find it weird how Chris didn't accept anything from anyone. I guess he just wanted to be perceived as independent. He was pretty odd man but smart. Really smart. His backstory was defiantly something I did not expect but interesting to say the least.

#Weird #ChrisMcCandless'BackStory #ListenToYourParents #LoveYourParents

Summary: Three months after McCandless left Atlanta, a National Service Park Ranger finds an abandoned (p. 26) vehicle and it happens to be Chris' Datsun. Even though the car was old (p.27) it worked wonders after the ranger takes it to get investigated. Chris reached (p.34) many destinations off of rides of people. He doesn't get weary (p. 35) from walking. He believes he is living life to the fullest (p. 37) extent.

Analysis: I got to hand it to Chris, the fact that he walked basically everywhere and got rides off people like how he did is really impressive. I don't think I'd have half the tenacity Chris had to do what he did. That poor Datsun though, left all alone, probably scared until it got found.

#LivingLifeToTheFullest #StrongSpirit #Don'tBeLikeChris #LiveSmarter

Summary: Chris use to work at McDonalds and his coworkers had different things to say about him. He was defiantly a strange one though. Because he was odd was lacking (p. 39) in the social department, his co workers thought he was kind of a lunatic (p. 41). He didn't really appeal (p. 38) to people. He moved around and eventually went homeless (p. 41) and it was all a survival (p. 45) of the fittest for him. He felt pride and accomplishment in this. McCandless was actually a pretty social person even though he was a bit mental and disgusting. When he was asked if anyone knew he was going to Alaska he changed the subject and didn't like to talk about it. McCandless drew inspiration from many different authors but he realized that the books they wrote were fiction and in real life, they were like everyone else, dirty disgusting obese pigs. Chris couldn't be convinced (p. 46) and when people tried to stop him, they couldn't.

Analysis: Chris is a pretty disgusting human being and quite the odd one. Why doesn't he just enjoy life to the fullest? Sure he likes the thrill of how he lives but there are so many other ways to find that thrill. Chris didn't have to die all he had to do was keep searching but he chose to do what he did. At least he is a dedicated man though. He had his beliefs and stuck by them no matter what it seemed like. Well, that was until he found it nature ain't no joke.

#Insane #ListenToOthers #HearThemOut #TheMoreYouMessAroundTheMoreYou'llFindOut

Summary: A man named Ronald A. Franz had asked for a copy of a magazine about Chris McCandless. Then, the scene switches as a man who goes by Burres picks Chris up and hitch hikes him to his destination. Burres and Chris would talk and Chris would get filled with anger (p. 52) whenever he thought about his family. Burres offers (p. 52) to drive Chris to San Diego. Burres and Chris write letter to each other and apparently someone had tried to kill (p. 53) Chris. Chris went to Franz a friend of his and stays there. Chris is uncomfortable (p. 55) with the camera that is pointed at him and when Franz asks to adopt Chris. Franza eventually finds out Chris dies and starts drinking (p.60).

Analysis: I feel bad for Franz, he wife and child died and he found out Alex had died too. He suffered from immense lost and that must be so traumatizing. If Chris had just stayed with Franz, maybe they both could have been happy.

Summary: McCandless worked for four weeks in Carthage because people are dependent (pg 61) on money. Some thought of Chris as celibate (pg 65) individual. The father seems to be the problem in Chris and his family's relationship. They are both stubborn and constantly go against each other. Chris becomes serious (pg 63) about cutting off family ties and even lets go of Carine in which whom he loves very much. Chris had no sexual (pg 66) desire or relations with people as it seemed he avoided these things. Chris could have suffered some relationship trauma (61) due to his family issues.

Analysis: Refraining from sexual desires is a hard thing to do but Chris seems to have a lot of self control. Or maybe it's not self control maybe he just asexual. It does make me curious as to why he never did, he was a good looking dude too. He could have definitely pulled some girls.

#ChrisNonExistenceSexLife #SexED #VirginityRocks #ChrisWasDifferent #Virgin

Summary: Jon Krakauer uses this chapter to show his readers that other men have come to their demise (p. 70) on Alaskan adventures, even if the circumstances are a bit different from those of Chris McCandless. First up is Gene Rossellini, the modern day caveman! Gene heads north from the lower 48 in the early 1970's. He's a super intelligent guy looking to test himself in Alaska ...sound like anyone we know?? Well, "the mayor of Hippie Cove" as Gene is called lives a prehistoric existence, testing himself to see if modern day man can live in the same way as the cavemen did it back in the day. Gene tries his hardest, but sadly writes, "I learned that it is not possible for human beings as we know to live off the land" (p. 75) before plunging a knife through his heart when he realizes the true extent of his failure (p. 75). Next up is crazy John Waterman. Lots of similarities to Chris: he's from the D.C. area, has MAJOR issues with his dad and is super smart. John is an accomplish climber and alpinist (p. 79) before he starts losing his marbles, running for president of the United States on a platform to end hunger. SPOILER ALERT: He doesn't win the election! Anywho, John comes unhinged, decides to climb the most difficult mountain in all of Alaska in the dead of winter and is never heard from again. Alaska state troopers believe he probably fell down a crevasse (p. 80) to his death, although his remains were never found. And last up is poor Carl McCunn. Another transplant from the lower 48, Carl is the life of the party - just like Chris. Good guy, fun to be around, charming, but lacks common sense & thinks someone will bail him out if he ends up in trouble. Similar to Chris, he hatches a plan to go off into the wild for a few months BUT he fails to set up an Uber (think Uber plane!) to come back and pick him up. The summer turns to fall and McCunn is starving and freezing. But wait...a plane flies overhead and it looks like Carl is going to be rescued!!! Unfortunately, Carl doesn't know that waving ONE hand in the air means you're good, no need to rescue you instead of throwing TWO hands in the air, the universal sign for HELP!!! Carl is dying a slow and painful death by a mix of starvation and frostbite, so in his final diary (p. 81) he explains that he shot himself in the head to end his misery. Guess Chris doesn't sound that crazy or unprepared after all, huh???

Analysis: After hearing the story of another person's misfortune, Chris situation probably doesn't even compare but still it is very gruesome and sad. Carl went through a slow and agonizing death it seemed like. You would think people would learn from other people's mistakes but I guess we can only learn from our own.

#FROSTBITE #RIPCarl #TwoHeadsAreBetterThanOne

Summary: Another chapter about a dude who isn't Chris McCandless. Everett Ruess shares many similarities with our main character though - he's a wanderer (p. 90), free spirit, well liked risk taker and lover of all things solitude and wilderness. Everett is a bit younger than Chris when he begins his vagabond (p. 91) journey, dropping out of UCLA after only one semester to follow his dream (p. 96) of living a nomadic existence. Unlike Chris, Everett focuses his travels in the southwest rather than north, but like Chris he also renames himself choosing the moniker Nemo after the character Captain Nemo in the Jules Verne classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. And yes, Nemo the fish we know today is named after that character, too! While on a solo expedition in Utah, Ruess seemingly disappears, never to be heard from again. A search party is sent to find him after he goes incommunicado (p. 93), but other than finding his donkey, some cave drawings/graffiti he made and pieces of his gear, Ruess was never seen again. Stories vary on what happen to him - maybe he was a victim of his own reckless innocence (p, 97) and fell while hiking or possibly drown, but some speculate that he was murdered by Native Americans. No one ever found him or his remains, so Everett's end remains a mystery. Like Chris, Everett's passion for nature and adventure won out over a conventional life, yet neither man made it out of the wild...

Analysis: Chris is not like everyone else but that doesn't mean he is the only person to do the type of thing he does. Everyone has dreams they want to follow but very few actually commit to it. I think the transition from Chris to this new guy was a nice touch as it adds more depth to the story.

#ChaseYourDreams #BeLikeTheGoodPartsOfChris

Summary: The information (pg 99) on Chris was very little. There was skepticism (pg 99) on where he was, who he was, and what he did. Westerberg called Alaskan state troopers and those troopers got lots of calls (pg 100). Westerburg told the troopers what he knew about Alex to prove he is not trolling and they take him seriously (pg 101). The search (pg 101) is expanded (pg 101).

Analysis: Even though Chris was an asshole, he definitely had some caring people and that's something he probably didn't appreciate enough.

Summary: Walt was a mercurial (pg 105) person after Chris' death. People ask and talk about Chris in front of Walt and he is in anguish and in pain. Walt grew up in an agricultural town and he was pianists with natural talent (105). Walt's marriage went down in flames and he and his wife divorced (106) and in he got a new baby mama. Chris was then born a healthy (106) baby. Chris was a nice guy and helped homeless and was against racial oppression. He was an outstanding (pg 116) person.

Analysis: Chris is actually such a great person and he seemed like someone I would have liked if I met him in high school.

Summary: If anyone is close to Chris, its Carine, his sister. She shares her side of the story talking about starting off with his pictures (pg 128). He always had unhappiness in his face but the picture of him when he's out in nature is happiness. When he's stuck with his family, he gets this icky feelings. After Chris had graduated, he wanted to bring Buck, his dog as he was a little beast (pg 128) and Carine thinks about how different it would have been if Buck was with him. Chris didn't want to take any chances considering Buck was injured after an accident (pg 128). When Carine found out Chris has starved (pg 131) to death she stopped eating and became anorectic (pg 131). Billie was suffering from this depression too and both Carine and Billie stopped eating for awhile as Walt, Chris' father kept eating more and gained weight.

Analysis: I feel very bad for Chris sister and mom and the situation is very obvious that she misses him. If buck did go with Chris, the situation would have still been the same as he was so focused and willing to do what he wanted to do best. The best thing Chris could have got out of bringing Buck is him having a companion and food at the same time.

#PoorCarine #BuckIsAGoodBoy #Don'tRiskTheLivesOfLovedOne #ChrisWasFoolishButGoodAtHeart

Summary: To answer Billie McCandless' question at the end of Chapter 13 about why anyone would do what Chris did, Jon Krakauer flips the script and tells his own story of Alaska adventure. At the age of 23, Krakauer decides to head to the great north to find himself not by living in the wild, but by climbing the major mountains in the 49th state. He becomes obsessed with hiking Devil's Thumb, a very steep, challenging ascent on the glacier (p. 138) known as the Stikine Ice Cap. Like Chris, completing this climb becomes the only important thing in Krakauer's life. Chris obsessed over the bush, while Jon's obsession (p. 134) is this rare climbing achievement. Much like he anticipated, the ascent is dangerous and potentially deadly. Krakauer proceeds with caution during whiteout snow storms while crossing over delicate crevasses (p. 140) which could crack and send him tumbling down hundreds of feet. On a beautiful May day, Krakauer decides that this is it, he must summon the courage and concentration (p. 142) he needs to summit this peak today or else...Even with the warm temps and sunny day, the ice is impenetrable and Krakauer panics (p. 143). He can see the summit, but he can't reach it. His only option is down.

Analysis: Mr. Krauker seems to be a lot like Chris. He's adventurous, had some daddy issues, family issues, and both loved and was passionate about what they did. I guess the only difference is that Krauker survived doing what he loved while Chris didn't. Him climbing the mountain's summit seems very dangerous and foolish to do but nonetheless he is very brave to do so.

#RealRecognizesReal #KrakuerAndChris #Adventurers

Summary: So Krakauer makes it back to his tent, all butt hurt that he didn't achieve his goal of summiting Devil's Thumb. In a genius move, he decided to smoke a joint to make himself feel better since he's a bit depressed. Well, he ends up setting his tent on fire causing it to vaporize one of the walls so the temperature inside drops by 30 degrees or so. Good job, Jon! Anyway, this causes him to think about his reason for running away to climb: his volatile (p. 147) history with his father! They have a very similar relationship to Walt and Chris - dad is stubborn, treats his son poorly, pushes him away with his medical school expectations (p. 148) since he himself is a doctor. Yeah, I know: we've heard this story before. Jon uses these complicated (p. 147) family memories as motivation: he's going to attempt to summit the Thumb to prove his disbelieving dad wrong! He fixes his tent by packing it with snow and forges a plan to begin his final ascent on a slightly "easier" side of the mountain, the southeast side. At sunrise, he summons ALL of his courage and overcoming all of the terrifying (p. 150) obstacles, he finally makes it to the top - YAY! He enjoys the view for a minutes, snaps a few pics, and begins his descent. When he finally makes it off the mountain, he tells a few people what he did. They aren't extremely impressed. This makes Jon think about what he did and why he did it, causing him to say, "I thought climbing Devil's Thumb would fix all that was wrong with my life. In the end, of course, it changed almost nothing. But I came to appreciate that mountains make poor receptacles for dreams. And I lived to tell my tale" (p. 155). Years later when writing this book, he realizes that his hubris (p.155) pushed him to his limits to achieve his goal, but that the impact his possible death had on those who loved him would've been catastrophic. This is why he believes that Chris had NO intention to die in the wild, that he was only chasing his young, irresponsible dream.

Analysis: It makes me wonder what a duo between Chris and Krauker would have been like. What if Krauker ventures with Chris into the wild? Maybe the both would have survived. Or died. I guess we'll never know. It is very to think Chris couyld have survived because Krauker does the same thing but is living. Both of their dreams takes a lot risks and sacrfice and they were both willing to do whatever it took.

#WhatEverItTakes #TheGrindNeverStops #ChrisAndKraukerDuo

Summary: Chris McCandless departed (pg 157) from Carthage and started his Alaska Journey that leads to his death. He hitched hike and traveled so much and met different people along the way. People such as Stuckey enjoyed Chris company (pg 159). Stuckey had fed and cared for Chris for three days and he asks Chris that he at least sends a letter (pg 160). Chris agreed to do so. After Stuckey, Chris met Gaillean who contributed (pg 162) into helping Chris. Chris stumbles upon many different problems but finds a way to face them or avoid them as he is no weak (pg 170). Krauker proceeds to relate to these.

Analysis: Chris was very lucky to meet some nice people along his journey and that he didn't meet a serial killer. He has some guts going with strangers alone and trusting them like that. I respect it some way.

Summary: Krauker visits the river Chris decided not to cross. Krauker brings some people with him to help and is more prepared than Chris was. As they arrive to the river. The author questions some of Chris' decisions. The people try to understand Chris' choices and behavior (pg 184). Krauker believed Chris lacked common sense (pg 184) and while he understands the difficulty (pg 186) of Chris situation he feels as if Chris could have made better decisions. Chris was a risk (pg 182) boy and was very adaptive (pg 182). Krauker however was better.

Analysis: Krauker is older and seems more prop at what he does so I agree with much of what Krauker says.

Summary: As this chapter focuses on hunting (pg 187) we dive deeper into Chris' journey. Chris ends up consuming (pg 191) things he shouldn't consume. He ate berries and seeds on random bushes out in the wilderness. Before this though he had killed (pg 188) many squirrels. Chris wasn't getting the proper food in and suffered from a calorie defecit (pg 188). Chris also things such as mushrooms, wild potatoes, and a lot more. After awhile, Chris was starving (pg 189). He's write in his journal about his journey. He makes entries, writes what he does, and even writes quotes. However after July 30th his physical condition went to hell. By August 6,7, a 8, there are no journal entries. On August 9 and 10, he tries killing other big animals but failed to do so. Eventually he writes his S.O.S. message and dates it "August ?" Chris had abandoned his cocky moniker (pg 198).

Analysis: Has Chris never heard to never eat random berries and food out in the open wild like that? I mean I get you had to do what you had to do to survive but did he even bother checking them? I feel bad that Chris went out this way. His cocky attitude is what got him there and he wasn't able to back it up unfortunately. His death sounds very scary and painful. His story is very sad too. For awhile, Chris seemed like he was doing fine too but eventually mother nature got the best of him.

#DontEatWildBerries #Starved #RIPChrisOnceMore #MotherNatureIsStrongerThanYouThink

Summary: Billie McCandles and Walt, her husband, are in a helicopter (pg 200). visiting (pg 201). the one spot their son had died. The trip was emotional and hard for them but at the same time they were ready. They go in the vehicle Chris was found dead in. They smell jeans that has Chris's smell (pg 202). There were no tears (pg 202) and they were glad (pg 203) they came. They are still baffled (pg 203), but just less than before. They have came to a conclusion and understanding. They aren't over it but they have reached and ultimatum.

Analysis: What an emotional roller coaster Chris' family must have gone through.
