The conflict in Ukraine involves a recent and ongoing war between the countries Ukraine and Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin commanded Russia to attack and invade Ukraine in an attempt to take over land that Russians believed was once theirs. Despite an ongoing Russia-Ukrainian war, starting on February 20th, 2014, The current conflict started on February 24th, 2022. This conflict involved an attack on the Ukrainian Donbas region. Russians would bomb military and civilian targets far from the frontline including electrical systems as well as systems involving water. It should also be noted Russia is a much stronger country than Ukraine which puts them at a heavy disadvantage due to them not having as many weapons and power on their own to attack. Ukraine's concerned about creating peace with Russia but they obviously have other plans.

America's Role in the Conflict

America's role in the conflict should be to help Ukraine and provide aid to them so they can be in a better position against advantaged Russia. According to an online article, "Since the invasion, the United States has taken the lead in providing Ukraine with military equipment and training, economic aid, a near-blank check of diplomatic support, the intelligence of use for stymying Russia’s offensive, and threatening draconian consequences should Russia use nuclear weapons in its campaign." (Shifrinson, 2022 par 1) I personally believe the United States should help Ukraine because it can help countries maintain their strong relationships to prevent further wars from happening around the world. According to the U.S. Department of State, "The United States reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, extending to its territorial waters. The U.S.-Ukraine relationship also serves as a cornerstone for security, democracy, and human rights in Ukraine and the broader region. " (Blinken, 2022 par 2) This evidence is saying that when countries support one another they can prevent more conflicts that are happening around similar territories and countries that share borders. One conflict that is similar to the Ukrainian war with Russia is the Israeli-Palestinian war. This war goes on between the Israelites who are primarily Jewish and the Palestinians who are primarily Muslim. According to a Vox article, "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one of the world’s longest-running and most controversial conflicts. At its heart, it is a conflict between two self-determination movements — the Jewish Zionist project and the Palestinian nationalist project — that lay claim to the same territory." (Beauchamp 2018, par 1) This is another example where two countries are at war with one another for territory. If we have countries providing aid toward one another or peace is portrayed then problems like this wouldn't happen.

Why should America be aware of this conflict?

America should be aware of the Ukrainian war because it has an impact not only on Ukraine and their raided country but what the future holds for the world economically and socially from country to country and their relationships. Many American citizens are skeptical and don't understand much about what the decision means. According to an NBC article, "To understand why you first must understand that democracy has been under “siege” for the past several years. Freedom House, which follows every country in the world, reported that global political freedom has declined every year since 2006. In 2021, its report concluded: "Countries with score declines in Freedom in the World have outnumbered those with gains every year for the past 16 years. This year only 25 countries improved their democracies, the fewest number ever recorded over this period of decline. If Russia were to invade and occupy Ukraine, it would contribute markedly to this global recession." (NBC News 2022, par 3) This evidence explains that the world's economy won't be thriving and freedom will be at a low if actions aren't taken. Another valuable point is we don't want war but more specifically history to be repeated. According to the same source, "The American humorist and public commentator Mark Twain allegedly once noted that “history does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes." (NBC News, 2022 par 5) This evidence explains that if the United States were to not take action, we would fall into the same conflicts and consequences with countries that we don't want to happen again. My best prediction for the war is that it will run on for a year then become less of a conflict and decrease in intensity ending the war for the most part.
