Seating Chart

If I were running this democratic classroom I would let the students have some say in the seating chart. Not right away, because the beginning of the year you need to understand the students and get to know them. After getting to know the students I would let them choose who they sit by but tell them that they need to choose someone that they are not going to have issues with. As well as prompting them that if I see an issue they have the option to re-pick or have me re-pick.

Class Management

The class would be managed by the teacher but the students would have a say in the management style that the class runs. In my classroom I would sit down with the students and make a list of management techniques that we would want to see in the classroom. After coming up with the rules you would then display it somewhere in your classroom, so the children can refer back to it, if need be.

The picture shows one example of a classroom management pyramid or chart that you could make. Having students follow or come up with this plan is a good way to get them engaged in the democratic ideas.

aIn a democratic classroom the children and the teacher are both involved. Yes, the teacher has a say and so does the student. We want the students to understand and be excited about what they are learning. We want them to ask questions and be curious to what we are teaching. We want them to know how they can make their community and world a better place.

I really enjoy this image because I think the students should get to teach some of the lessons. Such as here the student is teaching the calendar and the students are ready to ask questions. Students need to be apart of the classroom, not just the teacher doing all the teaching all the time.

A democratic classroom is going to be an environment where children have a say and they are getting excited about the items learned in class. It demonstrates fairness, authority and respect for all students.

Decisions made could go hand and hand with involvement because in a democratic classroom we want students helping with decisions and having a say. We want them to think about how they are running their classroom and how they want it to look. We also want them to think about why we give them this power, understanding that when they leave school someday they are going to be making their own decisions.
